6904 THURBER, JAMES (PERELMAN, S.J) The Great Quillow
New York Harcourt Brace 1944
First Edition. Signed presentation copy from the author James Thurber to Abby and Adam Perelman, the daughter and son of the great American humorist, author, and screenwriter S.J. Perelman, with Abby's young signature in pencil on the front pastedown. Inscribed by the author: ÒFor Adam and Abby with love and kisses, James Thurber.Ó With ÒAbbie [sic] & Adam PerlemannÓ in pencil in Adam's hand on the front free endpaper above Thurber's signed inscription. A lovely children's book illustrated in color by Doris Lee. With some spotting to the cloth and a bit of darkening to the spine and with some minor edge wear in a very good bright used price-clipped dust jacket. Sidney Joseph Perelman, popularly known as S. J. Perelman (1904 Ð 1979), was one of the most widely read literary icons of the Golden Age of American Humor. His New Yorker pieces, fiction, and collected essays are legendary for their biting wit and mastery of caricature and language. Off and on throughout his career he worked in film, notably as a contributing screenwriter on such Hollywood comedy classics as Monkey Business and Horse Feathers with the Marx Brothers, Mike Todd's Around the World in 80 Days (for which he won an Oscar), co-creator of the hit Broadway musical comedy One Touch of Venus starring Mary Martin, as well as many publishing (including twenty-one books), radio, television, and travel writing ventures. He was the brother-in-law of the writer Nathanael West with whom he shared a close relationship up until West's death in a car accident in 1940 at age thirty-seven, and whose memory and literary reputation he devoted himself to maintaining. His inner circle of literary and show-business friends and associates included F. Scott Fitzgerald, the Marx Brothers, Mike Todd, Harold Ross, T.S. Eliot, Al Hirschfeld, Bennett Cerf, Lillian Hellman, Dashiell Hammett, Dorothy Parker, Fred Allen, Kaufman and Hart, Ogden Nash, Ernest Hemingway, W. Somerset Maugham, etc. S.J. Perelman was a gifted man with conflicting desires living and working in complex times. While his writing brought much laughter to the world, his personal life reflected his restless spirit and inner struggles with his relationships to his family, friends, and intimates. Dorothy Herrmann ends her wonderful biography of Perelman with these insights: ÒÉhis genius was uniqueÉhighly literate and inventive, yet cranky and irreverentÉperhaps no other modern writer was willing to match his commitment to wordsÉWhether this was a rare gift or a feverish obsession is unimportant in the last analysis. For he made us forget for a brief time our own pain and sorrows Ð and enter a wild, wonderful realm of fantasy that was sublime.Ó

6910 TINTORETTO (JACOPO ROBUSTI, named Il TINTORETTO, Venezia, 1518-1594) Original Autograph Manuscript Contract Signed Commissioning the Great Renaissance Italian Painter, Tintoretto, to Create Two Paintings, Subscribed and Signed Twice by Tintoretto
Venice In folio (31 x 20.5 cm). 4 pages 1572
Original Autograph Manuscript Contract Signed Commissioning the Great Renaissance Italian Painter, Tintoretto, to Create Two Paintings, Subscribed and Signed Twice by Tintoretto. Venice: In folio (31 x 20.5 cm). 4 pages, 1572. This original manuscript contract consists of 26 lines, the last 7 of them written in the hand of the great painter Tintoretto. On the first page, the contract is twice signed by the painter, followed by two blanks, title on the last page. The first 19 lines, of the contract are in a different hand, in the last seven lines the subscription is by the celebrated painter, and a 4 line summary in the last page. One minor stain, two small holes in the 23rd line from ink corrosion, with loss of two initials. Venice, February the 6th and June the 25th, 1572. A superb historic document in which the Procurator Hyeronimus (Jerome) De Mula, commissions two paintings for his bedroom. The painter agrees to create the history of Lazarus's resurrection, and the other to be Moses receiving the law. The frames are to be made at Tintoretto's expense and that the two paintings are to have a total of 40 personages disposed in the way that "the excellent master will find suitable." Tintoretto is to paint them in his "finest colors and ultramarine blues of the best quality." Written in the Venetian dialect which translates in part, "Io Jacopo Tentoreto state and promise what is said above. I. Iacomo, receive as an account 20, that is twenty, ducati. (written on February the 6th). Then on June 11th, he writes ÒIo Iacomo Tentoreto receive as final and total payment of the above mentioned paintings 25 ducati that is twenty five.Ó Tintoretto was one of the leading painters of the Italian Renaissance. His autograph material is exceptionally rare. Original autograph manuscript material relating to the business of art in such an early period is especially rare in private hands. The most recent major work on Tintoretto in English is Tom Nichols's Tintoretto - Tradition and Identity (London: Reaktion Books, 1999), and in the book refers to this commission and this specific document in several places based on a 19th century description of it (Nichols did not see this original). One of the two resulting paintings from this document, ÒRaising of LazarusÓ is beautifully reproduced in full color on page 108.

Tsar Fyodor Ivanovitch by Count Alexei Tolstoy, The Lower Depths by Maxim Gorky, The Cherry Orchard by Anton Tchekhoff, The Three Sisters by Anton Tchekhoff, Uncle Vanya by Anton Tchekhoff. English Translation by Jennie Covan
New York Brentano's 1923
Later printing. From the library of the great jazz musician, composer, and bandleader Artie Shaw - with his autograph signature and bookplate. Also with pencil signature of Shaw's second wife, Mrgaret Allen to whom he was married from 1934 - 1937. On the page after the title is a signature of a previous owner. With a minor pencil notation in an unknown hand on the ÔCast of Characters' page for Tolstoy's play Tsar Fyodor Ivanovitch. Very good lightly used copy with a touch of fading to the spine and a few tiny tears to the cloth at the top and bottom of the spine without dust jacket. Arthur Jacob Arshawsky (1910 - 2004), better known as Artie Shaw, started out his career in music at thirteen as a saxophone player and switched to the clarinet at sixteen. He gained experience and skill while on the road at a young age which lead to steady work in the 30s as a session musician and performing with various bands and orchestras and on radio. His first critical acclaim came with his performance of ÒInterlude in B-flat" at a swing concert at the Imperial Theater in New York in 1935. And during the swing era, Shaw's big band enjoyed such enduring hits like Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine" and Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust," "Back Bay Shuffle,Ó "Moonglow,Ó "Rosalie," "Frenesi," and "Summit Ridge Drive." He was known for his innovation both in his musical arrangements and for becoming the first white bandleader to hire a full-time black female singer, Billie Holiday, in 1938 to tour the then segregated southern United States. Throughout his career he worked with many of the great jazz musicians and vocalists of his day, including Helen Forrest, Mel Torme, drummers Buddy Rich and Dave Tough, guitarists Barney Kessel, Jimmy Raney, and Tal Farlow and trombonist-arranger Ray Conniff. A charismatic and complicated man, Shaw was married eight times, most notably to actresses Lana Turner, Ava Gardner, Doris Dowling, and Evelyn Keyes, Betty Kern, the daughter of songwriter Jerome Kern, and ÔForever Amber' author Kathleen Winsor. In 2004, he was presented with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In addition to his musical career and accomplishments, he is the author of an autobiography, ÔThe Trouble With Cinderella: An Outline of Identity,' three short novels; ÔI Love You, I Hate You, Drop Dead!,' a collection of short stories, ÔThe Best of Intentions and Other Stories,' and an autobiographical novel titled ÔThe Education of Albie Snow,' which, sadly never made it to publication.

I was thinking of you, often enough, when I was writing it. There is a notebook here with reflections from the ÔPillars'. I pondered that book of yours...There you were, once on a time, no doubt of it, involved in a mess you didn't make. c.1937
Original set of thirty-six drawings from the Hal Roach Studio for the ÔTopper Car' which was custom-created for the classic screwball comedy film ÔTopper' starring Cary Grant, Constance Bennett, Roland Young, Billie Burke, and Alan Mowbray. The drawings are on vellum sheets ranging in size from 13 3/4Ó x 8 1/4Ó to 13 3/4Ó x 16 1/2Ó and show aspects and lines of the car with various perspectives and details. With occasional notations, including one presumably in the hand of Tony Gerrity, one of the designers at Bohman & Schwartz which reads: ÒWalt - am going to look at Barker's trucks this afternoon - be back around 3:30. Tony.Ó Includes an original illustrated brochure for the Cord automobile which was the initial inspiration for the car used in the film, but after researching the matter determined that it wasn't large enough to accommodate camera equipment and stunt drivers. With the original brown envelope (15Ó x 10 1/4Ó) which has ÒF. 17 - Topper, Automobile SketchesÓ written at the top right corner. The Cord brochure is in fine condition in printed wrappers and all of the drawings are in uniformly near fine only slightly used condition with creases from folding and occasional unobtrusive holes from removed staples. ÔTopper' tells the delightful story of a fun-loving adventuresome couple George and Marion Kerby (Cary Grant and Constance Bennett) who are killed in an automobile accident. They return as ghosts and set about lightening up the rather conventional life of their friend, bank president Cosmo Topper (Roland Young), much to the consternation of his wife Clara (Billie Burke). The ÔTopper Car' driven by the Kerbys was custom built by the Bohman & Schwartz Co. using a 1936 Buick Roadmaster chassis.

6955 TREFIL, JAMES & ARTIE SHAW The Edge of the World. 101 Things You Don't Know About Science and No One Else Does Either
Boston Houghton Mifflin 1996
Book Club Edition. From the library of the great jazz musician, composer, and bandleader Artie Shaw and with his bookplate. Also, with a Ôfake' signed inscription on the front free endpaper from ÔJames Trefil' to Shaw completely in the hand of Artie Shaw: ÒTo Artie, With respect & admiration, Jim Trefil.Ó With a few notations in pencil in Shaw's hand on the rear endpapers. As it turns out, Artie Shaw signed and inscribed some of his books to himself, both as a security measure and as a private bit of humor. Given that Shaw was well known for his reluctance to give autographs, this is an opportunity to have not only his signature, but an element of his mischievous personality as well. Laid in is a copy of a 2-page typed signed document written by Shaw's personal assistant attesting to and explaining the quirky story behind the counterfeit nature of the signed inscriptions. Lightly used copy in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of use.

6976 TURNBULL, ANDREW Scott Fitzgerald
London Penguin Books 1962
First Edition - British. Uncorrected proof copy with the publisher's typed and printed dated notice laid in. Paperbound. This was the office file copy of F. Scott Fitzgerald's agent, Harold Ober Associates, with their agency stamp. With a pencil note on the front cover just below the title: ÒContains notes in no other Edition.Ó and the date Ò12 May 1970Ó stamped on the lower right corner of the front cover. Very good copy with the slightest hint of age toning to spine and interior pages in printed wrappers. Harold Ober (1881 - 1951) was one of America's most respected and successful literary agents. He represented such distinguished authors as William Faulkner, and is perhaps best known for both his professional and personal association with F. Scott Fitzgerald. Ober's relationship with Fitzgerald was particularly close and supportive, and like any complex alliance, it suffered through occasional bouts of conflict and contention. Over the years Ober played an integral role in the cultivation of Fitzgerald's career, offering professional counsel and financial assistance, often giving him advances against unsold stories. In turn, Fitzgerald dedicated his book, Taps At Reveille, to Ober. After Fitzgerald's wife Zelda was institutionalized, Harold and Anne Ober stepped in as virtual foster parents to the Fitzgerald's young daughter, Scottie. When Fitzgerald died suddenly in Hollywood, CA while working on The Last Tycoon, his companion Sheilah Graham's first call was to Ober, with whom Scottie was staying, informing him of the sad news. Ober then called Zelda Fitzgerald in Montgomery, AL. The Obers continued their affection and support of Scottie, including lending her money so that she could complete her education at Vassar. All in all, Fitzgerald and Ober were clearly a dynamic literary force, and without question helped to bring modern American literature forward with intelligence, commitment, and style.
