1 ROSSEN, ROBERT (A.I. BEZZERIDES) Desert Fury (Originally Titled ÔDesert Town'). Screenplay by Robert Rossen. Based on the Novel ÔDesert Town' by A.I. Bezzerides
Los Angeles Paramount Pictures 1946 
First Edition. This original 145 page shooting script with color rewrite pages belonged to film producer, Joseph H. Hazen, and is specially hardbound in maroon tooled leather with raised bands, and with ÔJoseph H. Hazen' stamped in gold at the lower right corner of the front board. Near fine copy with some slight rubbing to the leather at the spine and bottom edges. This screenplay is dated August 26, 1946. Desert Fury was directed by Lewis Allen, and starred John Hodiak, Lizabeth Scott, Burt Lancaster, Wendell Corey, and Mary Astor. The film noir tells the story of a powerful casino owner in Nevada (Astor) whose daughter becomes involved with a shady character whose past begins to catch up with him. Joseph H. Hazen (1898 - 1994 was the executive producer for such classic films as Becket (1964), Roustabout (1964), The Sons of Katie Elder (1965 - uncredited), Barefoot in the Park (1967 - uncredited), and True Grit (1969 - uncredited).

New York Carrick & Evans 1938 
First Edition. Signed by the author, A. I. Bezzerides on the title page. Fine in a very good dust jacket. Light fade to tips of spine, with a moderate chip and crease to top of front panel with shallow chipping to edges. Excellent dust jacket design by Arthur Hawkins. The first novel to deal with long haul truckers and the basis of the acclaimed 1940 Warner Brothers film, They Drive By Night, starring Humphrey Bogart, George Raft, Ann Sheridan, Ida Lupino, and Alan Hale directed by Raoul Walsh. A.I. Bezzerides in addition to his novels wrote such action and film noir motion pictures as Desert Fury (1947), Thieves' Highway (1949), On Dangerous Ground (1952), Track of the Cat (1954), and Kiss Me Deadly (1955) and collaborated on screen work with William Faulkner at Warner Brothers in Hollywood.

First Edition. Inscribed and signed by the author in vintage fountain pen, A. I. Bezzerides to the noted writer Carey McWilliams. ÒTo my friend, Carey McWilliams, A. I. Bezzerides.Ó Slight darkening at spine else very good tight copy in a very good dust jacket chipped at bottom of spine and a few tiny edge chips. The first novel to deal with long haul truckers and the basis of the acclaimed 1940 Warner Brothers film noir, They Drive By Night, starring Humphrey Bogart, George Raft, Ann Sheridan, Ida Lupino. A hugely influential California writer, Carey McWilliams's book Southern California Country: An Island on the Land (1946) has been acknowledged by screenwriter Robert Towne as his inspiration and guide for his writing of the classic film Chinatown, and Hunter S. Thompson has stated that McWilliams gave him the idea for his book, Hell's Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga. McWilliams biography is crammed with remarkable books, social accomplishments and historic events including his 20 year editorship of The Nation. A.I. Bezzerides in addition to his novels wrote such action and film noir motion pictures as Desert Fury (1947), Thieves' Highway (1949), On Dangerous Ground (1952), Track of the Cat (1954), and Kiss Me Deadly (1955) and collaborated on screen work with William Faulkner at Warner Brothers in Hollywood.
