1 STRONG, L.A.G Dewer Rides
London Gollancz 1929
First Edition. Inscribed and signed by the author, L.A.G. Strong, to the noted Los Angeles book collector, Ingle Barr, with an amazing long inscription. The book, the author's first novel, is inscribed: ÒFor Ingle Barr. This story was first imagined as a poem. A gypsy and her daughter beg for shelter on a stormy night when the signs are are clear that Death will ride. They are let in; and when presently the dread sounds are heard, the gypsy hypnotizes her daughter and sends the girl's spirit out on the moor to watch and report. Though she knew nothing about this poem, the novelist Romer Wilson, who had second sight, told me that in three years I would write a successful novel, and that the germ of it was already in my head. I could not believe her - and only remembered the prophecy after the novel had in fact succeeded, in spite of not finding its direction for several chapters. L.A.G. Strong, Dec. 1957.Ó Additionally, the book is signed by Strong on the dedication page. Very fine in a near fine dust jacket with some slight dust soiling.

3 STRONG, L.A.G The English Captain and Other Stories
London Gollancz 1929
First Edition. Inscribed and signed by the author, L.A.G. Strong, to the noted Los Angeles book collector, Ingle Barr, with an amazing long inscription on two pages. The book was initially inscribed at the time of publication: ÒFor W.A. Mackay, with all good wishes. L.A.G. Strong.Ó then many years later Strong has added: Òfrom whom it was passed to my friend Ingle Barr. My writing has changed a bit since I wrote that inscription, round the time the book was published. The title story is founded on fact. Each summer holiday I used to frequent the Victoria Baths at what was then Kingston & is now town Laoquaire, The year was 1914. The priest's real name was Father Walsh, who taught at Blackrock College. Barney Gulligan is a portrait of George Holmes, a noted swimmer. Not all the story is fact; but there was an English Captain, as described, who I never saw again. ÔThe Sick Man' uses a real Dartmoor evening with my old friend Dr. Frederick Willington, also of Dublin. ÔProngs' is based upon a Sea Wall incident, and Mr. Kennedy & Long Mike belong to ÔThe Garden' [Strong's novel]. ÔThe Sea' & ÔThe Tide' were suggested by real incidents on the West Highland coast, but I am not the husband described in the former, & my wife is not the wife in the latter. L.A.G. Strong. March 23, 1958.Ó Very fine in a fine dust jacket. With Ingle Barr's bookplate. Additionally, enclosed are two interesting Typed Letters Signed from Strong dealing with inscribed this book, The English Captain, and other matters. Enclosed in a morocco and cloth box. This title is listed in Hubin's bibliography of Crime Fiction as some of the stories deal with crime.

4 STRONG, L.A.G The Garden, with its sequel, Sea Wall
London Gollancz 1931 & 1933
First Editions. Both copies of these novels are inscribed and signed by the author, L.A.G. Strong, to the noted Los Angeles book collector, Ingle Barr, with amazing long inscriptions. The Garden is inscribed: ÒFor my friend Ingle Barr. This book is three quarters straight autobiography. A photo on my bedroom wall, taken in August 1900, shows many of the characters: Granny & Grandpapa (in his bowler hat), my Mother, Uncle Ben, Aunt Patricia, Con (To whose memory this is inscribed) Eileen, Ann (both still living as I write), & Manny. In the centre looking rather censoriously towards the camera, is my four-year old self. Paddy Kennedy was a real person, name & all. So were Peg-leg & Long Mike. So was The O'Dowds. My father appears as a caricature, the way he seemed to the Irish. My Mother is distorted too, by the needs of the story, but not very much. I ? I don't know! It's hard to tell about oneself. L.A.G. Strong, June 1958.Ó The book is very fine in fine dust jacket with the slightest bit of aging. The novel's sequel, Sea Wall, is inscribed: ÒThis is a companion story to The Garden. Some the same characters appear, notably Paddy Kennedy, who was a real-life person, name and all. In essence the book tells the story of Ned (E.J.) Kennedy - no relation to Paddy - who was a minor member of the Abbey Theatre company. The Doctor and the Duchess are based on a real couple, though they are more freely treated than the portraits in The Garden, & the Doctor's past history is imagined. The two houses are still standing, but a wide promenade has swallowed up Kelly Shore and Scotsman's Bay. Doyle's Rock was still intact early this year, but soon to go, I fear. Mr. James is based on my great-uncle. L.A.G. Strong. December 1957.Ó The Sea Wall is very fine in a fine dust jacket. Both copies have Ingle Barr's bookplate, and each is enclosed in a morocco and cloth box. A lovely set both in condition and inscriptions. Certainly the most remarkable signed copies of these volumes.
