First Edition. One of an edition limited to 1,000 numbered copies. Laid in is a letter signed by the author, Hannes Bok, measuring 81/2Ó x 11Ó with an original ink drawing from Hannes Bok, the famous fantasy illustrator and writer, to acclaimed Hollywood composer, Max Steiner, who is best known for his score of Gone With the Wind, and who won 3 Academy Awards for his scores for Now Voyager, The Informer, and Since You Went Away, and was nominated for an amazing 15 more. The letter reads: ÒMerry Christmas to Mr. Steiner, my favorite composer. Hannes Bok.Ó Bok has added a charming drawing of a wily mouse. The letter is in near fine condition, having been folded in half with a couple of additional minor creases and an impression from a paper clip are its only flaws. The book itself has an interesting publishing history in that it was an incomplete manuscript by A. Merritt when initially chosen by the publisher, who subsequently convinced Hannes Bok to not only write an ending, but also to illustrate the book with 6 strikingly surreal full-page illustrations including the title page and one small piece at the conclusion of Merritt's work. Corners slightly bumped and gently frayed with the tops of the first few pages bearing the impression of a paper clip, else very good without dust jacket.

The Lord of Fantasy.Ó Virgil Finlay was one of the most noted and popular book illustrators of his day with his distinctive style gracing many fantasy and science fiction periodicals, including Famous Fantastic Mysteries, Thrilling Wonder Stories, Weird Tales, Strange Stories, as well as an edition of Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. Fine fresh copy with bright gilt-stamping in a near fine bright dust jacket with a couple of tiny chips and a very faint touch of darkening to the spine and rear panel. The front panel of the dust jacket is a colorful illustration of a fantastic golden ship sailing on a stormy sea with a large image of a winged lion on its sail.
