Paris 1 page, quarto February 22, 1806
Original letter from Emperor Napoleon I of France. The letter is in French and is written on plain stationery in the hand of one of his secretaries and then handsigned by the Emperor, 7 1/4Ó x 9 1/4Ó. The translation reads in full: ÒMonsieur Mollieu, I am sending you the attached note for your guidance; you must not let it be known that I have conveyed it to you. I now pray God to take you under his holy protection. Paris, 22, February 1806.Ó One crease from folding and with the barest suggestion of foxing, else fine. At the time this letter was written Napoleon had been the Emperor of France for just over a year, with his coronation taking place on December 2, 1804. In February 1806, following his victory at Austerlitz and the ensuing dissolution of the Habsburg Empire, the Ottoman Emperor Selim III recognized Napoleon as Emperor, which led to a formal alliance with France and war with Russia and England.
