1 ZANUCK, DARRYL F., JO SWERLING, W.R. BURNETT Crash Dive. Screenplay by Jo Swerling. Based on the Story by W.R. Burnett
Los Angeles Twentieth Century-Fox 1942
First Edition. Film producer and Twentieth Century-Fox studio mogul Darryl F. Zanuck's own copy with his large initials ÒD.Z.Ó on the front cover and his handwritten notations throughout this original 142 page final revised shooting script with color rewrite pages, dated July 18, 1942, for the World War II film ÔCrash Dive' directed by Archie Mayo, starring Tyrone Power, Anne Baxter, Dana Andrews, James Gleason, Dame May Whitty, Harry Morgan, and Charley Grapewin. Bradbound in printed studio wrappers. Very good lightly used copy with a bit of edge wear. Zanuck has written his suggestions in pencil on the first page for several of the characters and for one of the film's pivotal scenes: Òexcellent = X, better scene where she [Baxter] tells him about other man - too cold now - he discovers - turns on her - then finds it is Ward [Power] - silent fury. Pop [Grapewin] needs a touch more.Ó With two lines written by and crossed out by Zanuck: ÒFire should be thrill, above all.Ó and ÒFootball hero out.Ó Darryl F. Zanuck (1902 - 1979) was one of the founding fathers of the modern American film industry. In 1929 he became head of production for Warner Brothers, helping to successfully guide the studio out of the silent film era into sound. After establishing Warner Brothers' film style with such classics as ÔThe Jazz Singer,' ÔThe Public Enemy,' and ÔI Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang,' he broke out on his own in 1933 after a dispute over studio policy, and went on to form Twentieth Century Films with support and backing from Louis B. Mayer and Joseph M. Schenck. In 1935, Twentieth absorbed the financially troubled Fox studios, thus becoming Twentieth Century-Fox. He was an unusually active participant in the development of the films his studio was producing and established a reputation as the most Ôhands-on' of the major studio bosses, as this script indicates. As producer, some of his best known films include ÔLes Miserables,' ÔYoung Mr. Lincoln,' ÔDrums Along the Mohawk,' ÔThe Grapes of Wrath,' ÔHow Green Was My Valley,' ÔThe Razor's Edge,' ÔGentlemen's Agreement,' ÔAll About Eve,' ÔViva Zapata!,' ÔThe Man in the Gray Flannel Suit,' ÔThe Sun Also Rises,' and ÔThe Longest Day' which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture.
