2 ZANUCK, DARRYL F., LAMAR TROTTI, SONYA LEVIEN, & NIVEN BUSCH In Old Chicago. Screenplay by Lamar Trotti and Sonya Levien, Based on a Story by Niven Busch, and Originally Titled ÔChicago'
Los Angeles Twentieth Century-Fox 1937
First Edition. Film producer and Twentieth Century-Fox studio mogul Darryl F. Zanuck's own copy with his initials ÒD.Z.Ó on the front cover and his handwritten notations throughout this original 162 page first draft continuity script, dated March 12, 1937, for the classic film ÔIn Old Chicago' originally titled ÔChicago,' directed by Henry King, starring Tyrone Power, Alice Faye, Don Ameche, Alice Brady, Andy Devine, Brian Donlevy, Berton Churchill, and Sidney Blackmer. Bradbound in printed studio wrappers. Very good lightly used copy with some small edge tears. The film's producer, Darryl F. Zanuck has written some critical impressions and suggestions about the script and cast, especially on the first two pages. Zanuck writes on the first page: ÒAfter Gil Warren [Brian Donleavy] is licked the mob drops him - he has lost all prestige - a has been - he pleads with Dion [Tyrone Power] for leniency - Dion gives him a job - but always Gil is secretly waiting for his chance - he becomes leader of mob in fire - kills Jack [Don Ameche] with brick and we see him trampled to death by cattle - foot caught in hole. When Dion proposes marriage go thru same fight on floor as before - she weakens again. Episode with Gil - Belle [Alice Faye] - Senator [Berton Churchill] too hokey.Ó And on page two Zanuck jots down some possible cast names, only one of whom is actually cast: ÒDon Ameche [cast in the role of Jack O'Leary], Gable - Tracy - Cagney [for Dion O'Leary], Carol Lombard - Jean Harlow - [Myrna] Loy [for Belle Fawcett].Ó Later in the script, Zanuck practically rewrites a dramatic scene with Gil, Dion, and Belle concerning shady Chicago political dealings, and continues throughout the script to question dialogue, character development, and various pivotal scene choices. Darryl F. Zanuck (1902 - 1979) was one of the founding fathers of the modern American film industry. In 1929 he became head of production for Warner Brothers, helping to successfully guide the studio out of the silent film era into sound. After establishing Warner Brothers' film style with such classics as ÔThe Jazz Singer,' ÔThe Public Enemy,' and ÔI Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang,' he broke out on his own in 1933 after a dispute over studio policy, and went on to form Twentieth Century Films with support and backing from Louis B. Mayer and Joseph M. Schenck. In 1935, Twentieth absorbed the financially troubled Fox studios, thus becoming Twentieth Century-Fox. He was an unusually active participant in the development of the films his studio was producing and established a reputation as the most Ôhands-on' of the major studio bosses, as this script indicates. As producer, some of his best known films include ÔLes Miserables,' ÔYoung Mr. Lincoln,' ÔDrums Along the Mohawk,' ÔThe Grapes of Wrath,' ÔHow Green Was My Valley,' ÔGentlemen's Agreement,' ÔAll About Eve,' ÔViva Zapata!,' ÔThe Man in the Gray Flannel Suit,' ÔThe Sun Also Rises,' and ÔThe Longest Day' which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture.
