First Edition, First Issue with preliminaries and final flyleaf with no advertisements at the end of the volume. With a faint trace of wear to the extremities, else a fine clean copy with bright gilt. Tipped in is a two page Autographed Letter Signed by the author, George W. Cable ÒNorthhampton, Mass., Nov. 16, 1899.Ó written to Morris K. Jessup, New York City, reading: ÒMy dear Mr. Jessup, I can write this letter to you with confidence because of what you know of me, as well as what I know of you. For while your warm sympathy for all enterprises whose aim is the solving of problems that confront a nation, seeking the highest ideals. You know me to have been born in the farthest South and to have been a Confederate soldier, a close daily witness of the whole course of the Reconstruction period, a resident of the South for forty years, and a solicitous student of all its social and civil conditions. Hearing from President Frost, of Berea College, that that institution's work is to be called to your attention. I ask the privilege to say that I have visited Berea repeatedly, both years ago and very lately, and inspected its field and its activities at close view. By virtue of its unique location, its history, the spirit of its workers, and the devotion, energy and sagacity of its President, Berea is prepared to grasp, has always grasped and is grasping today, the whole Southern question with an inoffensive but faithful effectiveness, unequaled in our entire country. I consider the fortunes of Berea College peculiarly a matter of national concern, and am convinced that it is the part of a patriotic wisdom for those who can aid her with large benefactions.
