DEAN, JAMES & MARILYN MONROE Hollywood Dreamgirl. Number 1: The Beautiful Women of Hollywood New York Hollywood Dreamgirl 1955 First Edition. An original issue of ÔHollywood Dreamgirl' magazine, No. 1 featuring in-depth articles on James Dean, ÔActor Turns Photographer,' illustrated with four pages of black & white photographs taken by Dean of actress Pier Angeli, and an article on Marilyn Monroe, ÔThree Encounters with a Love Goddess,' story and photographs by Philippe Halsman. Lightly used copy with a touch of dust soiling and edge wear. The article on James Dean refers to his work in Elia Kazan's classic adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel ÔEast of Eden' and notes that while on the set of the film he seized a camera from the still photographer's case and began taking photographs of Pier Angeli who was visiting the set. The editors of ÔHollywood Dreamgirl' were so impressed by the results that they chose to print them in this issue. At the time, Dean was involved in a romantic relationship with Miss Angeli, whom he met while she was shooting ÔThe Silver Chalice' on an adjoining Warner lot. Tragically, Dean died in a car accident near Cholame, California on September 30, 1955. He received a posthumous Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his role as Cal Trask in ÔEast of Eden,' the first of two he would receive in this manner, the second being for his work as Jett Rink in ÔGiant.' Dean had an interest in photograpy and these striking and accomplished images of Angeli are the only James Dean photographs published in his lifetime. The article on Marilyn Monroe runs for 13 pages and includes text and black & white photographs by the great portrait photographer Philippe Halsman, whose photographs of Monroe are some of the most iconic of her career, including the terrific cover color photo on the November 9, 1959 issue of ÔLife' magazine of the lovely actress in which she is laughing and jumping while wearing a sexy backless black dress. In this ÔHollywood Dreamgirl' article there are many views of Marilyn Monroe, depicting her emotional range as an actress, her great beauty and allure, and a wonderful pair of photographs of her Ôwalking with a wiggle,' taken by Halsman on Sunset Boulevard before she was famous, showing her dressed in a modest knee length skirt and white blouse, taken from behind, with one shot of her looking back over her shoulder. At the time of this article, Miss Monroe was promoting her work in Billy Wilder's classic comedy film ÔThe Seven Year Itch.' Halsman's text is rich in detail and personal memories of his work with Monroe. The front cover black & white photographic portrait of Grace Kelly is also by Philippe Halsman. Other actresses appearing in this issue include, Doris Day, Ann Francis, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Mitzi Gaynor, Audrey Hepburn, Susan Hayward, Janet Leigh, Dorothy Malone, Jayne Mansfield, Sheree North, Kim Novak, Jane Powell, Jane Russell, Susan Strasberg, Mamie Van Doren, Esther Williams, etc. Price:

DEAN, JAMES Original Shooting Script Archive for the James Dean Classic Film - Rebel Without a Cause - Formerly Owned by Actor Jack Grinnage, Who Played "Moose", One of the Film's Three Main Hoodlums Burbank Warner Brothers 1955 First Edition. The archive of material which belonged to actor Jack Grinnage, who played "Moose", one of the three main hoods, in Rebel Without a Cause. Included are Grinnage's shooting script which he had hardbound, his original vintage Warner Brother studio pass allowing him on the lot specifically mentioning him shooting Rebel, copies of daily call sheets and group of 16 still photographs. Grinnage saved this archive from the landmark film and had the script hardbound, has his personal bookplate and is signed by him on the title page ÒJack Grinnage - Moose.Ó The script which contains the blue color rewrite pages preserves the deletions, additions and changes that the film went through as it was upgraded from a black and white second feature to a Warner Bros. color wide screen release - and which has since become a great classic certainly the great American film of rebellion in youth. The rare photos, with Grinnage's notes on the back, include two of a late night read-through of the script by the whole cast led by film director Nicholas Ray showing Dean wearing his glasses, a beautiful demure young Natalie Wood, Jim Backus barely awake and Grinnage intently studying this very same script. The studio pass, which names the film, was to be surrendered upon receiving his final check, but was kept anyway; it was good only for this picture. The call sheets show Jayne Mansfield auditioned for a role on more than one occasion, and also lists those who won the roles. Precious little production material survives from this film, much less a grouping from one of the participants. This script also contains the cut opening sequence of the film, when the hoods "roll" the old man for the Easter basket and get the wind-up monkey. As fans of the film know, the final cut beginning has Jim drunk on the sidewalk and playing with the wind-up monkey as he is arrested. He then takes it to the police station with no explanation of its origin. A terrific collection of production material from this critically acclaimed film, which defined James Dean to an entire generation. Enclosed in a handsome morocco and cloth clamshell box. Price:
