3 KOONTZ, DEAN R Original Typed Letter Signed from Dean R. Koontz to Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Dealer Roy Squires. With a Color Brochure for Koontz's Book ÔTwilight Eyes'
Orange, CA 1984
Original typed letter signed from Dean R. Koontz to science fiction and fantasy book dealer Roy Squires. With a large color brochure (9Ó x 12Ó)for Koontz's forthcoming book ÔTwilight Eyes' featuring illustrations by Phil Parks. The letter is on Koontz's printed stationery, dated October 6, 1984, and reads in full: ÒDear Roy, Enclosed is a copy of the brochure for the book that Chris Zavisa is doing under his The Land of Enchantment imprint. (And, yes, he plans to change both the title and author lettering to something more readable and to a much deeper and richer red.) If you decided you were interested in reaching him before he went away to the World Fantasy Convention late next week, his phone number is 313-453-8050. It is easiest to reach Chris in the evening (remember the time difference) and probably before Thursday of next week. At any rate, the brochure is a pretty thing - is it not? Looking forward to seeing Pavne. Meanwhile, all best wishes, Dean. Dean Koontz.Ó The brochure unfolds to show a terrific color illustration of a wild-eyed carousel horse with a small but powerful looking creature holding onto its side, extending a clawed hand to cut into the neck of the horse. The interior of the brochure has a full-page black & white drawing of the book's main character, Slim MacKenzie, looking at his reflection in a cracked public restroom mirror. The brochure is in part an announcement for the Land of Enchantment's publication of three editions of ÔTwilight Eyes' - a Collector's Edition limited to 50 signed, inscribed and numbered copies, a Signature Edition limited to 200 signed and numbered copies, and a regular hardcover edition. Both the letter and the brochure are in fine condition. Includes the large manila envelope postmarked Oct. 5, 1984 with Koontz's address label to Roy A. Squires in Glendale, CA. ÔTwilight Eyes' was released in 1985 in its original version, published by Land Enchantment. The novel is set in the surreal and mysterious world of a carnival and tells the story of psychic Slim MacKenzie, hunter and destroyer of Goblins with the ability to mimic human beings. Koontz has this to say about his work: ÒI have seldom been so swept away by a story while writing it as I was by ÔTwilight Eyes.' It engaged me so thoroughly that, while writing it, I seemed almost possessed. What began as a short novella, ended as a longish novel of 120,000 words. And I know, someday I will be compelled to return to these same characters and background.Ó

6 KOONTZ, DEAN Winter Moon (ISBN: 0747209103 / 0-7472-0910-3)
London Headline 1994
First Edition. Laid in is a typed letter signed by the author Dean Koontz on his personal printed stationery to a literary agent, dated February 14, 1994, in which Koontz addresses in great detail the reworking of his novel ÔInvasion' (published under his pseudonym Aaron Wolfe) which was published as a paperback in 1974. The results of that reworking became ÔWinter Moon.' Koontz writes: ÒDear Craig, Thanks for your note of 1 February. Yes, that NYT list description of WINTER MOON was clearly written for another book - and probably not one that I'd want to read! At least Ballantine has more in print than Berkley ever managed for a first year, and they seem to be selling about 20% more as well. / Weirdly, this was one of seven Ôolder' titles in the deal, a couple of which needed revising. By the time I Ôrevised' INVASION into WINTER MOON, I had developed all new characters, new background, new plot, and in the end used not one single sentence from the original book! But I had a ball with it. I know you are, like me, an inveterate collector, so I'm sending you a copy of the British hardcover [this very copy] (slow Fed Ex, so it won't vanish in the post office), which is the first hardcover and therefore somewhat collectible. Hope you enjoy having it. / Just finished working with Sonny Mehta [editor at Knopf] on the first book with them, for publication later in the year; he's a real delight, and their cover is going to be a knockout, so I'm highly motivated and at work on the next one....With all best wishes, Dean [signed] Dean Koontz.Ó Pages are starting to brown due to the paper quality not being the highest, else fine in a fine fresh dust jacket.
