Long identified as an L.A. artist, this from the essay ÔEd Ruscha' by James Ellroy: ÒAll art is the celebration and implementation of fresh perception. Recognition becomes re-recognition as old visions are supplanted or replaced. The banal becomes the supernatural; the squalid assumes new power; transcendent beauty acretes [sic]. The inherent stimulation of newness is often the artists' best friend. Ed Ruscha moved to Los Angeles in 1956. He has given us his shock of arrival for fifty-three years and has thus transmogrified a great city and rebuilt it to his own specifications.Ó Ed Ruscha is among the most famous of contemporary artists, and is often associated with the Pop Art movement of the 1960s, along with Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Robert Dowd, Phillip Hefferton, Joe Goode, Jim Dine, and Wayne Thiebaud. He has mastered many mediums, including film and photography, with his ground-breaking work ÔEvery Building on the Sunset Strip,' a book of composed of photographs of a two and one half mile stretch of the twenty-two mile boulevard. Some of his other photographic books are: Twentysix Gasoline Stations (1962), Various Small Fires (1964), Some Los Angeles Apartments (1965), Nine Swimming Pools and a Broken Glass (1968), A Few Palm Trees (1971), etc.
