Fox.Ó After the printed dedication which reads: ÒThis book is for Raymond Chandler, who suggested it.Ó There is an asterix drawn in ink by the author which leads to the following line in the author's hand: ÒThe subject was suggested by R.C. in his letter to me of 4 January 1951.Ó A faint touch of aging to the pastedowns, else very good plus in a very good lightly used dust jacket with tiny bit of rubbing and edgewear. The front panel of the dust jacket is a graphic illustration of a man half-concealed in the shadows watching another man fall from a third story open window.

The front panel of the dust jacket is a graphic illustration of a man half-concealed in the shadows watching another man fall from a third story open window. The book's printed dedication is to Raymond Chandler.

Inscribed: ÒFor Wayne Warga, with thanks for assorted kindnesses. From his friend, Jim Pepper. Santa Barbara, April 9, 1980.Ó Laid in is an inscribed note card from the editor to Mr. Warga. Also laid in is a black & white photo reproduction of Raymond Chandler, James Fox, and Ned Guymon looking at a book together. Very fine without dust jacket as issued. A terrific collection of correspondence between two great hard-boiled detective novelists, Raymond Chandler and James M. Fox, spanning the years 1950 through 1956. Wayne Warga was the youngest editor at Life Magazine at age 25, and reported on John F. Kennedy's race for the Presidency, and went on to cover the Civil Rights movement for the magazine. For many years, Warga was one of the leading writers at the Los Angeles Times where he did in-depth articles and features on writers and people in the arts. Later, Warga became a mystery novelist, creating three well-received bibliomysteries: Hardcover, Fatal Impressions, and Singapore Transfer, featuring Los Angeles rare book dealer, Jeffrey Dean.
