1 LANG, FRITZ & JOAN BENNETT The Bennett Playbill -- By Joan Bennett
New York Holt, Rinehart & Winston 1970
Second printing. Presentation copy inscribed by Joan Bennett to film director Fritz Lang. Inscribed: ÒTo Dearest Fritz, With love and devotion always, from your ÔWoman In the Window.'Ó Fritz Lang and Joan Bennett collaborated on five film noir pictures including the great masterworks The Woman In the Window, Scarlet Street, Manhunt. Bennett has become known as the Queen of the Film Noir Femme Fatales. Of all Lang's heroines, Bennett had a remarkable ability to get on with the mercurial Lang and at one point they created their own production company. This is Bennett's memoirs and has an interesting section dealing with Lang and their film noir pictures. Ò......Fritz was a real Jekyll and Hyde character, calm and purposeful one moment, and off on a tirade the next. At script conferences he was rebellious, on the set he was outrageous and demanding. I remember we couldn't use doubles for Michael Redgrave and me for a sequence in a burning house. We fled, terrified, through scorching films, time and again, and it wasn't a fire for toasting marshmallows. Fritz and I had some thrilling arguments during the filming. When he was in a successful period, he was impossible and Darryl Zanuck told me, ÒLet him have one good resounding flop and he'll be adorable.' He got it in Secret Behind the Door. It flopped and Fritz was adorable at once...To me Fritz Lang remains one of the great directors in the history of the business, and working with him was a fascination exercise in the art of making motion pictures. On occasion, whenever he makes a trip to New York from his home in California, we still get together for a delightful evening of do-you-remember-when, and the trouble-with-you-was.Ó

2 LANG, FRITZ Typed Letter Signed from Film Director Fritz Lang
Rome 1 page, quarto July 28, 1961
Original Typed Letter Signed by the author, handsigned ÒFritzÓ, written on Palace Hotel Stationery in Rome, written to film producer Richard Gordon, who worked on Lang's last film which he discusses as well as an unrealized film project. Ò...I feel a little guilty that only now I find time to answer your letter of May 2nd, but the trip to India took me much longer that I thought and then I went head over heels into the writing of the manuscript, had to fly to Paris for the opening of Mabuse [The Thousand Eyes of Dr. Mabuse], was there for three days in Hollywood and didn't even find time to go to the Locarno Festival which was in my honour. Please forgive me. I wonder how the dubbing of Mabuse turned out. Or are you still working on it? About ten days ago I talked to Carol Hellman about the ÔAssignment Argentina'. You know he is always busy and you can consider yourself happy if you catch him between four long-distance calls and six appointments only. He assured me that he came to an understanding with you and the he would send the letter he wrote you about. Useless to say I haven't gotten his letter? could you be so kind to let me know how the matter really stands? So that when I see Carol the next time I completely informed....Ó Fritz Lang letters are very uncommon. Fine.
