3 GIELGUD, JOHN Original Autograph Letter Signed by Actor Sir John Gielgud
Buckinghamshire, England Notecard, 5 1/2Ó x 3 1/2Ó February 8, 1989
Original autograph letter signed by the author, actor, Sir John Gielgud, to the sister of actress Lilli Palmer, on Lilli Palmer's passing. Gieldgud writes: Ò...How sweet of you to trouble to write. They cut my tribute a bit, including ÔC'est-Lady Parlequi Piel' - which I thought a pity. It seems she has left the Henley house to be used as a school for students of comedy! Not a very good idea it seems to me. Better to sell the house and found a scholarship at one of the drama schools with the proceeds. I was so very fond of her and of Lilli too. What became of Carlos [Palmer's second husband]? Love to you as ever, John.Ó The letter is written on the verso of a printed notecard which reads: ÒWith the Compliments of Sir John GielgudÓ and comes with the postmarked envelope addressed in Gieldgud's hand. Both the card and the envelope are in fine condition. The lovely and elegant Lilli Palmer (1914 - 1986) made her stage debut in Berlin in 1932, then, after the Nazi takeover, made her way to Paris to work in the Moulin Rouge. She first appeared in motion pictures in 1935 and in 1945 came to the U.S. with her first husband, actor Rex Harrison (with whom she starred in the 1945 film, The Rake's Progress / Notorious Gentleman), where she enjoyed a career in Hollywood and on Broadway before returning to Europe in 1954. Her autobiography, Change the Lobsters and Dance, was met with critical and popular acclaim. 4 GIELGUD, JOHN Original Autograph Letter Signed by Actor Sir John Gielgud
Buckinghamshire, England 1 page, 7Ó x 9Ó January 30, 1986
Original autograph letter signed by the author, actor, Sir John Gielgud, to the sister of actress Lilli Palmer, on Lilli Palmer's passing. Gieldgud writes: Ò...It is so long since I had the pleasure of seeing you, but I have such pleasant memories of you and your family when you lived in Hampstead. And now the dreadfully sad news of dear Lilli's death impels me to send you an inadequate line of sympathy. I last saw Lilli in New York several years ago when Arnold Weissberger invited us both to see The Pirates of Penzance in Central Park and she seemed as beautiful and attractive as she was when I used to see her, years before, when she was married to Rex [Harrison] at Portofino. With all her many talents as an actress, writer, and painter, she had a great gift of friendship, and I always felt I knew her much better than I really did. I actually remember her one day part in ÔSecret Agent,' when we watched her have a furious row - in German of course - when she met Peter Lorre! We never knew what it was about, but even then she made a great impression of personality. You must be so very sad at losing her as so many admirers will be in many countries. I always envied her being able to act in so many different languages. Don't dream of answering, please, I just wanted you to have a line of sympathies. Ever sincerely, John.Ó The letter is written on Gieldgud's personal printed stationery. Two minor creases from folding, else fine.
