Laid in is a typed autographed letter on St. Martin's Press stationery to award-winning mystery and detective writer Sue Grafton from editor Ruth Cavin, requesting a review and or a comment on Ms. King's book. With ÒHi, Sue!Ó in Ms. Cavin's hand next to her signature. Also laid in is a typed autograph letter from Laurie R. King in which she discusses her love of the mystery and detective fiction and her academic background in theological studies which plays a major part in this novel. She writes in part on the provocative nature of her novel: ÒThere are many things I love about crime fiction: its tight structure, its serial nature, its faint air of fantasy, and particularly its freedom to explore the ultimate issues of reality few of us are called to confront...'A Letter of Mary' has a number of religious ideas moving around in the background.
