1 LOVECRAFT, H.P Autograph Letter Signed ÒHPLÓ from H.P. Lovecraft to Fellow Fantasy and Horror Writer, Clark Ashton Smith
10 Barnes St., Providence, Island 2 pages 8_Ó x 14Ó March 15, 1927
Ó....Los Angeles appears to be a particular centre of emptiness & pretenseÑa nest of crazy cults & l opsided Babbitry & realtorism out of which nothing good can be expected for many mellowing generationsÉÓ Approximately 1125 words. With two newspaper enclosures. 96% Unpublished. Selected letters II, p. 113. ÒDear CAS:Ó HPL waxes eloquently upon a new correspondent, artist Bernard Dwyer ÉÓHe works slowly, painstakingly, & thoughtfully, & certainly has a genuine kinship to the world of fantasy & unrealityÓ. Donald Wandrei is the subject of the 2nd paragraphÉÓWandrei's verse is certainly full of promise, & it reflects a certain mood & atmosphere with such poignancy that one would dislike to set limits to his future development in that medium...Weird Tales has just accepted his 'Twilight of Time', (which Wright wants to rename 'The Red Brain'...I am almost flattering myself that a letter of mine in praise of Wandrei may have had something to do with the change of attitudeÉÓ HPL comments upon Smith's article on the death of George Sterling in The Overland MonthlyÑÓÉ.will wager you lead the list of contributors in interest & worthÉ.Some people have a gift of slopping over most distressfully in the face of death, & elegiac literature will always be an elaborate cenotaph of mawkishness & banality.Ó Indolence is the topic of an interesting and humorous paragraph from HPL, as well as Smith's own fictions ÉÓ...indolence is indeed excusableÑit is my own outstanding characteristic, & is with me not nearly so well justified by the results of the industrious momentsÉ.It is certainly discouraging to compare the dominant attitude of today with that of the Renaissance, but reflection shows that the change is as inevitable as it is tragic...Individuals with the old instincts must make the best of it through a dream-life of their ownÑ& be thankful whenever accidents gives them the mechanical plaudits of a mob whose approval or disapproval is of slight significance.Ó Clark Ashton Smith's O'Brien award is applauded by HPLÉÓ Congratulations on the unexpected prize: I hope it will do good work in stimulating your reputation among a public that requires labelsÉÓ He also comments upon an author whose book he helped tune-up some of the poems, wrote an introduction and helped to get publishedÑ ÒWhite FireÓ - ÒHis work was mild and pleasing, but not often inflamed by the divine spark of genius.Ó HPL's ÒSupernatural Horror in LiteratureÓ is among the topics discussed in the closing paragraphÉÓ One item of the contents will be my history of weird fiction; which Cook induced me to type as it was, without the additions I had in mind. Later he says he may arrange with me for its enlargement & re-publication as a bookÉ.I fear you'll be disappointed, for the thing really doesn't amount to muchÉ.Cook has plans for future thin books...possibly my ÒShunned House.Ó ...Signed, ÒHPLÓ.
