HOOVER, HERBERT Original Mimeographed Speech by Former President, Herbert Hoover, at a Meeting of the Friends of the Chicago Boys Clubs, Dated May 5, 1949 Chicago Boys' Clubs of America 1949 First Edition. Five pages, stapled at the upper left corner. About fine with just a hint of age toning and a single neat crease from folding. A compelling speech by former U.S. President, Herbert Hoover, then Chairman of the Boy's Clubs of America, in which he speaks to the circumstances and needs of at-risk urban boys (whom he describes as Òpavement boysÓ), and, to a somewhat less-articulated extent, girls, and how the Boys' Clubs may offer sanctuary and support. His speech concludes: ÒAnd what do I say in conclusion? But little. You picture that pavement boy entering the door of that house of constructive joy, his boys club. The light of his face - and the gleam of honest devilment in his eye - the feeling of trust and security in his heart - and the future of our country and world in his hand.Ó The Hoover administration (1929 -1933) was in place as the Great Depression swept across the nation, and was succeeded in office by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who guided the country to prosperity and through the dark times of World War II. HOOVER, HERBERT Original Press Release Announcing a National Radio Address by Former President, Herbert Hoover: ÒShall We Send Armies to EuropeÓ to be Broadcast on November 19, 1941 on the Columbia Broadcasting System Network Sponsored By the Union League Club of Chicago, Illinois Chicago The Union League Club of Chicago 1941 First Edition. A single sheet of newsprint, printed on one side only, measuring 13 5/8Ó x 17 1/4Ó, neatly folded into sixths. Near fine condition with some minor age toning and a 3/8Ó tear to the body of the piece, not affecting the legibility of the text. A fascinating and articulate presentation of former President Herbert Hoover's views on whether or not the United States should commit troops to Europe, just weeks prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor (December 7, 1941) which effectively ended the debate and brought us abruptly into wartime. Hoover closes his piece with this impassioned paragraph: ÒSurely if we ceased to fan hate and fear; if we have labor peace; if we definitely act to preserve the Fifth Freedom; if we strive to save these millions of European children; if our people were definitely assured that we are not going to send our armies to Europe or its suburbs without the authority of Congress; that we have a practical plan to preserve peace after the war - then we could summon far greater unity. Then, also, my fellow Americans, we might summon the whole world to reason.Ó The Hoover administration (1929 -1933) was in place as the Great Depression swept across the nation, and was succeeded in office by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who guided the country to prosperity and through the dark times of World War II. HOOVER, HERBERT Original Typed Letter Copy From Former President Herbert Hoover to Mr. W.K. Kellogg and An Original Typed Letter Signed From Former President Herbert Hoover to Mr. W.H. Vanderploeg New York 1942 Original typed letter copy dated May 26, 1942, single page, 8 1/4Ó x 11Ó, from former President Herbert Hoover to Mr. W.K. Kellogg of the Kellogg Foundation. In the letter, Mr. Hoover urges Mr. Kellogg to attention a copy of his newly published book, The Problems of Lasting Peace, which he co-wrote with Hugh Gibson, in hopes that Mr. Kellogg would be willing to endorse the distribution of the book to public libraries, colleges, and high schools. Hoover writes: Ò...We have sought to bring some sanity into this problem and its discussion. Among other things, to show that lasting peace can be based only upon free enterprise. The main object, however, is sanity in the vivid discussions of peace that are going on all over the country...Many of these discussions are leading into dangerous lines of action, based wholly upon emotion and not on reason.Ó Included is another letter, this one typed on Mr. Hoover's personal printed stationery, is signed by the author, and dated June 10, 1942 It is addressed to Mr. W.H. Vanderploeg of Porter & Stiles, in Battle Creek, Michigan, and references the letter sent to Mr. Kellogg just a few weeks prior, also noting the inclusion of a copy of the book. The Hoover administration (1929 -1933) was in place as the Great Depression swept across the nation, and was succeeded in office by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who guided the country to prosperity and through the dark times of World War II.
