First Edition. Laid in is a typed letter signed by the author Theodore Huff dated April 8, 1951. The letter is in response to an inquiry from James Keddie, noted collector of Sherlock Holmes material, and reads in full: ÒDear Mr. Keddie, Thank you very much for your praise of my Chaplin book. Glad you enjoyed it. As for the still of Chaplin as Billy, I have never seen one. In fact there are almost none at all of his childhood and stage career. I hunted all through the William Gillette scrapbooks at the Theatre Collection of the N.Y. Public Library, but not a sign of a photo. (I never saw Gillette as Sherlock, but I did see him in the flesh at a theatre opening, ÔThe Admirable Crichton' revival.) I can well imagine that he was the only good Holmes. If you ever come across such a photo, please let me know and I will do the same. Very good copy with some very minor use and edge wear in a very good dust jacket with a trace of edge wear and dust soiling. With an appendix listing Chaplin's films with casts, release dates, and other facts. Also, with a list and capsule biographies of Chaplin's associates and other figures important to his career.
