1 LIPSCOMB, W.P. (VICTOR HUGO) An Album of Original Black & White Production Set Stills from the 1935 Film ÔLes Miserables' Based on the Novel by Victor Hugo
Los Angeles 20th Century Pictures 1935 
This is the studio's own original album of 84 black & white production stills from the classic 1935 film version of Victor Hugo's novel ÔLes Miserables' directed by Richard Boleslawski, starring Frederic March, Charles Laughton, Cedric Hardwicke, and Rochelle Hudson. Each photograph is mounted on cardstock and the album is bradbound in black leather with the title in white on the spine and measures 11 5/8Ó x 8 1/4Ó. Each photogrpah is an image of the dressed set showing placement of all furniture and props, in case the studio needed to re-shoot the scene at a later date. All of the images include the chalked studio scene slate recording the details of the scene. Near fine copy with a touch of use and very minor edge wear. The film received Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Assistant Director (Eric Stacey), Best Cinematography (Gregg Toland), and Best Film Editing (Barbara McLean).

First Edition. Text in English and French. A beautifully presented and well-documented exhibition catalogue compiled and described by Rosemary Lloyd and Maria Krebs of the novels, plays, letters, manuscripts, poetry, political and editorial essays, and children's stories by one of France's greatest literary figures, Victor Hugo. Illustrated throughout with illustrations from and facsimiles of Hugo's works, including his first volume of poetry, Odes et Poesies Diverse (1822), his first novel, Han d'Islande (1823), the title page for Notre-Dame de Paris (1831), stills from the Charles Laughton classic film, the book publishing Hugo's argument to the United States government stating his opposition to the planned execution of John Brown, Letters on American Slavery (1860), a still of Frederic March and Charles Laughton from the Twentieth-Century Fox 1935 film of perhaps Hugo's most well-known novel, Les Miserables, and much more. The front cover reproduces an illustration from The Hunchback of Notre-Dame showing a suffering Quasimodo bound to a public stake while the lovely young Esmeralda offers him a drink of water. Paperbound. Fine condition. An essential addition to the library of any Victor Hugo enthusiast and collector.

New York Triangle Books 1940 
Photoplay edition issued to coincide with the release of the RKO film starring Charles Laughton as the Hunchback, Maureen O'Hara as Esmeralda, Sir Cedric Hardwicke, Thomas Mitchell, and Edmond O'Brien. Ownership inscription. Pages tanned as usual, else about fine in a lightly used dust jacket with some small chips and tiny tears and light dust soiling. The front panel of the dust jacket is a photo portrait of Laughton and O'Hara in their roles.
