The printed text readsÓ Autograph of (then hand-signed Jas. W. Marshall) THE DISCOVERER OF GOLD IN CALIFORNIA. January 19th, 1848.Ó James W. Marshall, discovered gold while building the lumber mill for John Sutter at Coloma, California, which actually occurred on January 24, 1848, sparking the California Gold Rush of 1849 which became a worldwide event as people rushed to the promised land in hopes of riches. Marshall, himself, was not one of those to benefit greatly from his discovery, and late in life helped support himself with the selling of these cards with his autograph. Signed by the author. Very few have survived. Very good condition. A striking and rare memento of a landmark event in American history. Price:
