2 [KUBRICK, STANLEY]. COBB, HUMPHREY Paths of Glory
New York Viking Press 1935
First Edition. The basis of the acclaimed 1957 film directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Kirk Douglas, Adolph Menjou, George Macready, and Ralph Meeker set in France during World War I. Signed and inscribed by actor Joseph Turkel who played the character Pvt. Arnaud in the film. Turkel has written a very long inscription filling four pages: ÒWhat the fuck do you want from us Mr. Kubrick? This is the 19th take on this fucking scene. Is Mr. McReady not on his spot? Am I? How many more fucking takes do you need? AM I blowing my lines? Is Mr. McReady blowing his? Just what is it that you fucking want? The only thing that you're saying is - cut - print - O.K. - let's take it again. In all my fifty years in this business, I've never come across anything that's even close to this.' All of the above was in a shout. This tirade was launched by Adolph Menjou to Stanley Kubrick on the set of ÔPaths of Glory.' George McReady was standing next to Stanley not saying a word with a suffering patrician air. I was standing, unnoticed, at the rear of the set which had become quiet as death. We were shooting ÔPaths of Glory' in 1957 in Munich. ÔYou are doing fine Mr. Menjou & so is Mr. McReady it's just -' ÔIs it the fucking cameraman? Is it the lighting? Fire the cocksuckers & let's get on with business. How many more takes are you expecting from us?' ÔMr. Menjou it's just a difficult scene & I know it. I always try to do something a little better. I know the both of you are giving me the best that you have & I appreciate it. I always work this way & I would really appreciate it if we could do just one more.' ÔAlright let's shoot the fucking thing again.' Menjou was disgusted. Menjou & McReady took their spots & on action did the whole scene again & as far as I could see they did it flawlessly. It was the opening scene in the movie & about 10 pages of movement & dialogue where they were discussing the taking of the ÔAnt Hill.' Truth to tell Menjou made a good point. ÔVery good - cut - print - let's go to lunch.' TIME LAPSE OF TWENTY YEARS. Stanley & I were on the set of The Shining and during a lull we were chatting about this & that when I recalled the incident with Menjou. I brought it up. ÔYou were on the set Joe?' ÔYeah I wasn't doing anything that day and I wanted to see Menjou & McReady work.' ÔI didn't see you.' I was standing in the back and after the fireworks were over I got out fast. After all those takes Stanley, which one did you use?' Stanley stiffened & didn't say a word for 20 seconds. ÔTurk, we know each other pretty damn well. Never ask a director what his method is. Never about what he does and why he does it. I'm going to tell you this once but never ask a director what his modus operandi is. I used the very last take because after screaming at me for five minutes his voice had changed slightly. The tension from his screaming carried over into the next take. It fit the tension in the scene.' There you have a bit of Stanley Kubrick. Joseph Turkel, Pvt. Arnaud.Ó Near fine copy with just a hint of use in a very good plus bright dust jacket with a some very minor edge wear and two small rubbed spots at the spine. Joseph Turkel has had a long distinguished career in film most notably working with film director Stanley Kubrick in The Killing and The Shining, as well as playing Dr. Tyrell the creator of the androids in Bladerunner, the classic science fiction film.

3 [KUBRICK, STANLEY].
Turkel has written a very long inscription filling four and a half pages: ÒWhy did Stanley Kubrick always insist on having total creative autonomy on each & every film he ever made? It always wasn't that way. The turning point came from the following incident in, ÔPaths of Glory.' In the scene where the Priest came in to console the three condemned men who were to die the following morning a strange thing happened. Emile Meyer who played the ÔPriest,' Ralph Meeker who played ÔParis,' & myself who played ÔArnaud' were busy rehearsing & blocking, getting the scene in shape. Tim Carey who played Ferol was also there working hard while kidding around some. Stanley was walking around with his lens finder trying to get some interesting angles while listening all the time. At that moment Stanley was called away. We kept on rehearsing and worked the dialogue over until Stanley came back in about 10 minutes. He looked & spoke like a different man as he approached Emile & myself. ÔTurk, Emile, I'm sorry. I'm going to have to cut out the lines you both have regarding mankind & Christianity.' I was stunned. ÔWhy, Stanley, that's the meat & potatoes of the scene from my point of view of the character.' ÔI'm sorry Turk.' Emile popped up. ÔThat's some juicy stuff you're cutting out Stanley.' ÔI'm sorry guys, that's the way it will have to be.' All the while he was explaining to Emile & myself he was looking down & avoiding our eyes as we were talking to him. He had never done that before to my knowledge & has never done it since to me or anyone else as far as I could see. Here are the lines that were taken out. PRIEST ÔMANKIND HAS STEADILY IMPROVED SINCE THE DAWN OF CHRISTIANITY.' ARNAUD ÔMANKIND, FATHER, HAS STEADILY IMPROVED SINCE THE DAWN OF MANKIND.' These are the lines that never made it into the movie. WHY? I found out later that somehow the church had found out about those lines & wanted them deleted. In those days one didn't question the power of religion. Today it's a different story thank God. Stanley (producer) & James B. Harris objected, but to no avail...period. Stanley was later heard to mumble... ÔNever again, never fucking again will anybody tell me what I can or can't film. Contracts...it's a matter of contracts. If it's in the contract that I control everything from soup to nuts, from A to Z, that's when I'll sign, not before.' Stanley never signed another contract that those words weren't in it. Joseph Turkel, Pvt. Arnaud.Ó Near fine copy with just a hint of use in a very good dust jacket with a trace of edge wear and some small chips and tears. Joseph Turkel has had a long distinguished career in film most notably working with film director Stanley Kubrick in The Killing and The Shining, as well as playing Dr. Tyrell the creator of the androids in Bladerunner, the classic science fiction film.

God yes, Religion no. what is the one thing that all the major religions of the world find difficulty with ??? SEX, RightÓÓ In ÔEyes Wide Shut' the orgy scene was led - - - if you paid attention - - - by the three major religions. The costumes were that of a Rabbi, priest, and minister & the one thing that stuck out above all, were some of the loveliest high hipped full boobed (Is there such a word) beauties that ever graced the screen and were nude with full frontal nudity. 9 KUBRICK, STANLEY Typed Letter Signed from Film Director Stanley Kubrick Regarding His Film - A Clockwork Orange
London 1 page, quarto August 15, 1972
Written to Myron Karlin of Warner Brothers in California, Kubrick remarks about the first run Paris showing of A Clockwork Orange. Regarding ÒFirst Run - Paris - A CLOCKWORK ORANGE - It has been intimated at various times, by this one and that one, that, though the Paris run is very successful, and even at present, in the midst of the summer doldrums, is running 100% over the hold-over figure, that should the run continue a great deal longer, Gaumont [the French theatre chain] might decide that it does not wish to block its first run theatres, and that they might put pressure on Warner Brothers to go into the city break. I hope that you personally will issue the necessary policy directives so that an occasion such as this will never be allowed to develop beyond a glint in the eye of the Gaumont circuit. I hope that you are well. Thank you very much for the telex from Venezuela. I look forward to seeing you again soon, Best regards, Stanley Kubrick.Ó Kubrick's letter are scarce especially dealing with his films.
