New York Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith 1931
First Edition - American. Signed presentation copy from John Middleton Murry, inscribed by the author: “For Lotte & Lance Whyte, Affectionately, John Middleton Murry. May 26, 1931.” According to the forthcoming book,, G.B Edwards & The Book of Ebenezer Le Page: A Documentary Memoir written by Edward Chaney: “Lancelot Whyte (1896-1972) was a now unjustly forgotten, Scots-born, Cambridge-educated polymath, whose various publications were to include The Unconscious before Freud (London, 1960). From 1937 to 1943, he became chairman and managing director of Power Jets, which included the Whittle jet engine project. His second wife was the cultured German, Lotte Heller, whom he married on Christmas Day December 1926, and who died in 1941. In his autobiographical Focus and Diversions (London, 1963, pp. 63-7), he talks of meeting her and Murry in 1925 and of his enthusiasm for the Adelphi, to which he occasionally contributed.” A lightly used copy with a split to the front hinge, some fraying to the top and bottom of the spine, slight fading to the cloth at the top edge of the front board, and some darkening and rubbing to the spine in a very good dust jacket with some darkening to the spine and outer edges and a few tiny edge nicks.
