1 DREISER, THEODORE Original Photograph Portrait of Theodore Dreiser Inscribed to the Editor of An American Tragedy

Undated, probably 1925-1930, a formal portrait (approximately 7” x 9”), inscribed "For Louis [Campbell] from T.D." According to Helen Dreiser (My Life With Dreiser, Cleveland, 1951), Campbell edited the manuscript from the beginning and worked further on revising the book in galleys. Also included is a photograph of Helen Dreiser inscribed to Campbell, the previously mentioned biography, presented to Campbell, and a collection of clippings of Campbell's various reviews.

2 pages. Though not signed, there are corrections, additions, and deletions in Ginsberg's hand, and the word “Revision” in the upper right hand corner. This version differs greatly from the one published in his Collected Poems. Crease from folding, staple holes, else about fine.

3 GINSBERG, ALLEN Original Typed Manuscript, Unsigned of “The Moments Return”
N.p. n.p. n.d. (c. 1965) 
2 pages. Though not signed, there are two page notations in Ginsberg's hand, and minor erasures. This version follows the revised manuscript, but on the second page Ginsberg has repeated a few lines over and over, playing with the punctuation, word order and emphasis, an interesting look into his creative process. “The Moments Return” was eventually published in his Collected Poems. Crease from folding, staple holes, else fine.

4 HERMANN, ALEXANDER Autograph Signature of Alexander Hermann Signed On a Card

Scarce autograph signature in ink on small card, 2" x 3.5". ALEXANDER HERRMANN (1844-96). German magician, known as "The Great Herrmann". Naturalized American citizen in 1876. Toured with his wife, Adelaide, adapting Robert Houdin's aerial suspension routine and performed their own version of "bullet catch". Developed the "Herrmann pass" or "Herrmann shift", a sleight of hand move used to control cards.

5 LEE, ROBERT E Autograph Letter Signed, 1 page, quarto
West Point, New York October 19, 1854 
Signed: “R.E. Lee.” Robert E. Lee served as Superintendent of the United States Army Military Academy at West Point from 1852 to 1855. Lee writes to Captain Geo. Dutton, of the Army's Engineering Agency in New York City: “...I find it necessary to procure another Lithographer, & in an advertisement for that purpose, have taken the Liberty to appoint 10 O'Clk Tuesday 24th, for persons to Call at the Engineer Agency, for information. To save you so much trouble as possible, I will send down our present Lithographer to answer their Call; & have now to ask your permission to allow him to be at your office at the time Specified to give the necessary information to such individuals as may offer. Hoping that this will meet with your approval....” The letter is in superb condition with the paper fine and the writing dark. Lithographer was an important position at West Point, responsible for creating military manuals, maps, and charts. Ironically, Lee's training of officers would provide leaders for both sides in the coming Civil War.

London 1 page, 16 mo. June 23, (1828 
Mackintosh writes from Clapham Common, June 23, (1828). Tries to arrange a meeting with a friend. "While I had a house in Wimpole Street I often rode in Regent Park. Since my return here, it would be rather too great a distance. I do not know where I could conveniently meet you. I shall be at Holland House, Sunday, Monday & Tuesday, where I shall be more accessible to you. If you tell me, by Post, when you'd come I shall immediately answer you to say when I'd be a home. Yrs truly, J. Mackinoths.". SIR JAMES MACKINTOSH (1765-1832). Scottish philosopher, historian. Member of Parliament (1813). Recorder of Bombay (1806-11). Commissioner of Board of Control for India (1830). Professor of Law at Haileybury College (1818-24). Author of "Dissertation on the Progress of Ethical Philosophy", "History of the Revolution in England in 1688", etc. Very slightly soiled. With vintage steel engraving of Mackintosh as "Recorder of Bengal". Rare in autograph material.

Original autograph postcard signed by the world-famous prima ballerina, Galina Panova, with a black & white photograph by Jennie Walton of Ms. Panova and her husband, ballet star, Valery Panov, in a head and shoulders length dramatic pose. The text addresses various productions in which they were performing in Europe, including ‘Cinderella.' Fine. Galina Panova and Valery Panov are both Russian emigre dancers who were once members of the Kirov Ballet.

8 ROSS, WILLIAM CHARLES Autograph Letter Signed from Sir William Charles Ross
2 pages, 16mo Christmas Day, no year 
To a Miss Anderson. “I was unfortunately in the country when your kind invitation to dine with yourself and family, arrived, and I did not peruse it until my return late on Saturday night. It would have afforded me great pleasure to avail myself of it if have been in town, and with many many thanks. I beg to remain, dear Miss Anderson, yours very truly, W.C. Ross, 38 Fitz Sq. Christmas Day. P.S. May you and yousr have a happy new year.” Narrow tape stains along four edges of second page where originally pasted to a larger sheet. Very good. SIR WILLIAM CHARLES ROSS (1794-1860). British painter, portrait miniaturist. knighted in 1842. Elected a Royal Academician in 1843.1
