A very handsome example of Raymond Chandler's classic mystery. The basis of the classic 1947 MGM film starring Robert Montgomery as Philip Marlowe. Jacques Barzun & Wendell Hertig Taylor in their classic work, A Catalogue of Crime, go even further, remarking that The Lady In the Lake is a “superb tale” which “moves through a maze of puzzles and disclosures to its perfect conclusion. Marlowe makes a greater use of physical clues and ratiocination in this exploit that in any other. It is Chandler's masterpiece and true detection.”

The painting, itself, measures approximately 7 3/4 inches wide by 9 1/2 inches tall, matted to an overall size of 11 inches wide by 13 1/4 inches tall. An excellent showing large black orchids against a bright red background with yellow lettering. Detective Nero Wolfe's great pleasure and obsession in life is the growing of orchids. Interestingly, with the dust jacket of the final issued book, the publisher changed the whole color scheme of the jacket. The artist's red background is changed to black. The black orchids were changed to blue, and the gold lettering, changed to yellow. Seen side by side, the book in jacket and the artwork, the changes are very intriguing.

The great detective with Goodwin brandishing a gun are depicted in red with a black background with white lettering. In the accompanying book the figure are printed in a light blue color.
