1 LISTON, SONNY Sonny Liston. The Real Story Behind the Ali - Liston Fights By Paul Galleder (ISBN: 9781935530657 / 978-193553065-7)
Pacific Grove, CA Park Place Publications 2012
First Edition. Signed by the author, Paul Gallender. Illustrated. As new in dust jacket. An intimate biography of World Heavyweight Champion boxer, Sonny Liston, offering a meticulous examination of Liston's two bouts with Muhammad Ali and how events and circumstances outside the ring played a role in their outcomes. Liston's first match with Ali (then known as Cassius Clay) was on February 25, 1964 in Miami, Florida, with odds of 7-1 in Liston's favor. Liston lost that fight which led to considerable controversy as to whether or not he had thrown the fight. They met in the ring for a rematch on May 25, 1965 in Lewistown, Maine and Liston lost, accompanied again by controversy. From the book's jacket flap: “When Sonny was forced to lie down against Ali in that fight, his reputation, legacy and ultimately his future, went down with him. A largely white sporting press despised and feared Liston and was only too happy to demean and forget him after the Al bouts. Because of the media's unrelenting negative attacks, most of what the world knows about Sonny has no basis in fact.” A fascinating portrait of a man and the times in which he lived.

New York Privately published 1936
First Edition. Signed and inscribed by the author ‘Lud' - Ludwig Shabazian - to Grace T. Gaskell, his proofreader for this book. Inscribed: “To MY proofreader, I should say SUPER-proofreader, with sincerest thanks for the ‘bulls' she caught and the embarrassment she saved me. To Grace T. Gaskell, with sincere thanks. Lud. Sept. 11, 1936.” Laid in is a small typed note of reply from Grace to Lud, dated September 14, 1936, in which she thanks him for the book and the opportunity to work with him on this project. James Walter Braddock (1905 – 1974) was an Irish-American boxer who held the world heavyweight championship from 1935 to 1937. He was given the nickname ‘The Cinderella Man' by Damon Runyon (who contributed the foreword to this book) for his amazing comeback from a floundering career which had lead him to give up boxing for a time while he supported his family by working on the docks during the Great Depression. Braddock's story was the basis for the film ‘The Cinderella Man' directed by Ron Howard, starring Russell Crowe as Braddock, Renee Zellweger as his wife Mae, and Paul Giamatti as Braddock's manager, Joe Gould. Giamatti received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
