Phil, We breathe rare air. This year has been quite the journey. I was very fortunate recently to have the opportunity to work with Matthew Modine. Joe Greco (Director) hired me; he told me it was a pro-bono project. I told him Matthew Modine had to tell at least 10 Stanley Kubrick stories; that would serve as a form of payment. I arrived at Matthews [sic] house at the top of Laurel Canyon, which as an amazing 300 deg. view of the surrounding Los Angeles area. Without any prompting at all Matthew started talking ‘Stanley'. Stanley told him that no idea was a bad idea. They made that agreement so that they would keep an open mind while filming Full Metal Jacket'. Matthew then pulled out this book that he published two years ago called Full Metal Jacket Diary. He started to read some of the passages to us. He told us that it was a diary that he actually kept during the course of the filming of ‘Full Metal Jacket' because his character Pvt. Joker was a correspondent for Stars and Stripes. You can pick up the book and read any page or take the whole journey as Matthew suggested. I took the whole journey and wanted to pass it on to you. Thanks for the great year and looking forward to the journey of 2008. Regards, Ed Gutentag.” The letter is signed “Ed” with a smiley face drawn next to it.
