A 38 page illustrated catalogue published in conjuction with an exhibit of ninety works from the private art collection of the great film director and prolific 20th century art collector Billy Wilder and his wife. Very good plus copy with a hint of age toning to the edges of the rear cover and a faint bit of rubbing to the spine fold in printed wrappers. Artists represented in this catalogue include Georges Braque, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Joseph Cornell, Jean Dubuffet, Alberto Giacometti, Paul Klee, Gustav Klimt, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, David Park, Pablo Picasso, Egon Schiele, Kurt Schwitters, and Yves Tanguy.

2 GRIFFITH, D.W Original Letterpress Printed Christmas Card from Silent Film Director D.W. Griffith
4 7/8” x 7” 1920s 
A Christmas card from silent film director D.W. Griffith with a letterpress design on the front and a printed message on the interior reading: “Mr. D.W. Griffith sends Christmas greetings and best wishes for the New Year.” The image on the front of the card is in sepia-toned ink and shows three gentlemen in early American dress gathered in a library where a cozy fire lights the room and one of the men stands reading from an open book. The text reads: “Old wood to burn / Old books to read / Old friends to trust.” Evidence of mounting on the back of the card. Folded at the top edge, touch of darkening to the bottom edge, else fine. Silent film director D.W. Griffith is unquestioned as the single most influential figure in the history of American film, with an amazing body of work to his credit, including such classics as The Birth of a Nation, Intolerance, Orphans of the Storm, and many more.

A Christmas card from silent film actor Harry Langdon with a holiday greeting on the front reading: “Greetings Harry Langdon” and a sweet color print on the interior of two young people out caroling with a full moon and a bright starry sky overhead. Evidence of mounting on the back of the card. Folded at the left edge, touch of darkening to the bottom edge, else fine. Vaudeville entertainer, circus performer, and film actor Harry Langdon was one of the best known silent film comedians, alongside Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, and Buster Keaton. He stared in such silent film classics as ‘Tramp, Tramp, Tramp,' ‘The Strong Man,' and ‘Long Pants.'

Ms. Rienfenstahl is best known for her brilliant and controversial 1934 film, Triumph of the Will, a landmark documentary film of Hitler's Nuremberg rallies in 1934.

4 3/4” x 7” 1932 
A Christmas card from Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circuses with a holiday greeting on the front reading: “Greetings from Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Combined Shows” The front of the card has a full color illustration of an acrobatic performer doing a hand stand on top of the head of an elephant within a red and green circle, giving the impression of having burst through a paper wall. The inside of the card reads “Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Combined Shows” with a trio of golden bells wrapped in holly and ribbons above it. The left side of the card's interior has a terrific full color illustration of a white and red faced clown wearing a white suit with fancy ruffles at the neckline, wrists, and ankles, and with bright red pom-poms as decoration, holding a happy Santa Claus on his shoulders while balanced on a ball painted to look like the Earth, with the words “The Greatest Show on Earth” written on it. In the background is a classic small town winter scene. Evidence of mounting on the back of the card. Folded at the left edge, touch of darkening to the outer edges, else fine and bright.

Rudolph Valentino's copy with the large Valentino Library bookplate depicting a vivid scene of a Crusader on horseback among Saracens designed by William Cameron Menzies, Valentino's friend and art director on the Valentino films, Cobra, The Eagle, Son of the Shiek. 298 pages. 80 full page color plates by artist G. Perugini. Gilt-stamped blue buckram binding very sound, boards lightly rubbed, mild edge wear/corner wear. Foxing throughout. Small tear to bottom edge of single page and small tape-repaired tear to bottom of single page, both near back of book. Contains all the Roman religious and historic costumes of the Court of Rome with their descriptions. From Valentino's library in his classic Hollywood home, Falcon Lair, part of a group of illustrated reference books he bought in Europe and assembled in preparation for his unfilmed historical costume epic, The Hooded Falcon.

New York Simon & Schuster 1940 
First Edition. A gift copy from film director Roland V. Lee with a small card laid in from Lee presenting the book. Handwritten by Lee in blue ink it reads; “Merry Xmas to Linda, with love, Roland.” Roland V. Lee was a noted Hollywood film director who began in the silent film era and went on to create such films as Son of Frankenstein, The Bridge of San Luis Rey, Tower of London, Sign of Four, etc. The book recreates the various sections of the film including the terrific sequence showing Mickey Mouse as The Sorceror's Apprentice. With many color and black & white illustrations including 15 hand-tipped color plates. Noted book illustrator Kay Nielsen worked on the film, Fantasia, and some of his work is in the book. Tiny tape mark on front endpaper where card was once attached, else fine clean copy without dust jacket. Attractive copy with a Golden Age of Hollywood association.
