2 STUART, GLORIA Boating With Bogart
Los Angeles Imprenta Glorias 1993
First Edition. One of a special deluxe edition limited to 100 copies of this beautiful hand-made miniature book (3” x 2”) which is signed by the author - actress Gloria Stuart who was nominated for an Academy Award for her supporting performance in Titanic and who is the designer of this book. Laid in is a 32 cent U.S. postage stamp of actor Humphrey Bogart. Twenty-six pages, unpaginated. Printed by Robin Price. Dark blue marble paper boards with a printed paper label reading “Bogie” affixed to the spine. Very fine. The very funny true story of a misbegotten sailing trip to Santa Catalina Island from Los Angeles aboard John Barrymore's former yacht, the Mariner, in 1938 with four couples; Humphrey Bogart and his wife Mayo Methot, whom Bogart nicknamed ‘Sluggy', Mary Baker, a successful writer's agent and her husband, screenwriter Mel Baker (Seventh Heaven and The Last Days of Pompeii), Gilbert Gabriel, an ex-Broadway drama critic and his wife Honey, and Gloria Stuart and her husband Arthur Sheekman, screenwriter and “boon companion to the Marx Brothers”. Gloria Stuart is one of Hollywood's most enduring treasures, who at 93 is still acting and creating artist's books. She starred in James Whale's classic Universal horror films The Old Dark House (1932) and The Invisible Man (1933), John Ford's Airmail (1932) and The Prisoner of Shark Island (1935), Busby Berkeley's Gold Diggers of 1935, appeared twice with Shirley Temple in Poor Little Rich Girl (1936) and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1938), with Peter O'Toole in My Favorite Year (1982), in Titanic (1997), and in some recent television movies.
