First Edition of the Film Director's First Book. Laid in is the opening page of a contemporary radio play written by Brooks, with the name of noted Hans Conried printed at top edge. Brooks has written and signed by the author in ink: “To the greatest and most versatile actor, I know. Richard Brooks.” Near fine in a price-clipped very good plus or better dust jacket (Couple of dings to bottom edge of boards. Very shallow chipping at spine ends. A few small chips at spine at edges of the front panel of dust jacket).

4 COSTIGAN, JAMES Little Moon of Alban and A Wind From the South. Two Plays by James Costigan

First Edition, First Printing. Signed presentation copy from James Costigan to actor Charlton Heston and his wife. Inscribed by the author: “August 18, 1963, Beverly Hills, Inscribed to Lydia and Charlton Heston in celebration of fifteen years of unflagging friendship. With love and gratitude, Little Jimmy Smith from Mt. Gretna, PA, alias Costigan.” Above the inscription, beneath a penciled price of $3.50, Costigan has humorously added, “and cheap at half the price”. Illustrated with black & white stills from each play, featuring Julie Harris (to whom the book is dedicated), George Peppard, and Tom Clancy from ‘Little Moon of Alban' and Julie Harris, Donald Woods, and Michael Higgins from ‘A Wind From the South'. Very good copy with a hint of use in a very good slightly used dust jacket with some small chips and tears and a bit of darkening to the spine. James Costigan won an Emmy for the television play Little Moon of Alban which was part of the acclaimed "Hallmark Hall of Fame" series, airing on March 24, 1958, starring Julie Harris, George Peppard, Dirk Bogarde, and Tom Clancy. Presentation copies from Costigan are rare, especially in such a terrific association.

5 LEWIS, SINCLAIR & SIDNEY HOWARD Sinclair Lewis' Dodsworth - Dramatized by Sidney Howard. With Comments by Sidney Howard and Sinclair Lewis on the Art of Dramatization

First Edition. Special presentation edition signed by the authors Sinclair Lewis and Sidney Howard. This issue was made in a tiny quantity specifically for members of the original Broadway production with a special printed page which reads “To Jo Mielziner for helping to turn ‘Dodsworth' from a manuscript into a play with gratitude of [hand signed in ink] Sinclair Lewis and [hand signed in ink] Sidney Howard. New York - September 1934.” Illustrated with photographs from the production. Fine bright copy in a fine dust jacket. An important presentation copy to, Jo Mielziner, who designed the sets for the original production. Sidney Howard discusses Mielziner's contribution in his essay on adapting the novel into play on pages xvi-xvii. Sidney Howard was a very successful Broadway playwright in the 1930s and wrote the screenplays for Gone With the Wind and both film adaptations of Sinclair Lewis' Dodsworth and Arrowsmith. Jo Mielziner is arguably the most distinguished set designer in Broadway history creating the staging for such classics as the original productions of A Streetcar Named Desire, The Glass Menagerie, South Pacific, Carousel, Mister Roberts, Key Largo, Abe Lincoln In Illinois, Pal Joey, The King and I, Guys and Dolls, etc. An excellent association copy of a highly successful Broadway play.

6 MARX, GROUCHO, ROBERT FISHER & ARTHUR MARX Minnies Boys. Book by Robert Fisher and Arthur Marx
New York (circa 1969) 
This is Groucho Marx's own copy of the playscript with his hand annotations and corrections and with his signature “Groucho” twice within the text, all in pencil, specially bound in orange cloth covered boards with “Groucho Marx” gilt-stamped to the bottom right corner of the front board, and with the title gilt-stamped at the spine. Original 82 page script for the Broadway musical comedy based on the beginnings of the Marx Brothers careers in show business entitled Minnie's Boys, book by Robert Fisher and Arthur Marx. Bradbound. Fine copy. The opening night cast included Shelley Winters as Minnie (Mrs. Marx), Lewis J. Stadlen as Julie (Groucho), Arny Freeman as Sam (Frenchie) Marx, Daniel Fortus as Adolph Marx (Harpo), Irwin Pearl as Leonard Marx (Chico), Alvin Kupperman as Herbie Marx (Zeppo), and Gary Raucher as Milton Marx (Gummo). Actor Lewis J. Standlen won the 1970 Theatre World Award and the 1970 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Performance. There was one musical number "Mama, a Rainbow" (sung in the show by Adolph and Minnie), which was later recorded and released by Steve Lawrence and Jim Nabors. Groucho served as a production consultant for the show and made an appearance on the Dick Cavett Show during the run of the musical with the five young actors who portrayed the Marx boys. The script is accompanied by a scarce copy of the LP original cast recording record of this musical play.

The basis of the film In Love and War, starring Sandra Bullock as Agnes ('Aggie/Ag') von Kurowsky, the nurse who cared for Ernest Hemingway (after he suffered shrapnel wounds in Milan in 1918) with whom he fell in love and planned to marry, with Chris O'Donnell as Hemingway. Henry S. Villard was the youngest Red Cross ambulance driver in Italy and became a close friend of Hemningway and von Kurowsky while he was in the hospital bed next to Hemingway.

Later edition. With a handsome original self-portrait ink drawing signed by Orson Welles of himself as “Captain Shotover” in Welles's 1938 Mercury Theatre New York stage production of Shaw's Heartbreak House. On the front pastedown is an original etching bookplate by Marie Laurencin for art collector, book collector, and travel writer, Edward Wassermann. The only bookplate designed by Laurencin and depicts a young woman with a pearl necklace. Very good in a very good dust jacket with a striking portrait of Shaw on the front cover.

First Edition. Signed presentation copy inscribed by the author, to Ziegfeld Follies promoter Florenz Ziegfeld and his wife, actress Billie Burke, inscribed: “For Billie Burke and Florenz Ziegfeld. With best regards of Thyra Samter Winslow. March 1926.” From the library of Harpo Marx, the great clown of the Marx Brothers comedy team, and his wife actress Susan Fleming Marx, former member of the Ziegfeld Follies and star of early talking films like Million Dollar Legs with W.C. Fields. With a charming bookplate illustrated by Susan Marx with a drawing of Harpo in his comic character which reads: “FROM THE LIBRARY OF HARPO & SUSAN MARX.” Billie Burke is best remembered for her role of Glinda the Good Witch in the classic film The Wizard of Oz. Very good with some light shelfwear and dust soiling in a used dust jacket chipped at the extremities. The book is a novel of Broadway theatrical life with much reference to Florenz Ziegfeld.
