3 CHINESE ART BOOKS A Book of Reproductions of Landscape Paintings by Yan Tian Jushi, a Pseudonym of Wang Jianzhang
A book of twenty-four black & white reproductions of landscape paintings in Sung and Yuan Styles by Yan Tian Jushi, the pen-name of Wang Jianzhang, whose given name was Jianzhang and who styled himself as Zhongchu. Accordion fold format, 8 1/2 “ x 12 3/8”, with lovely light green textured silk wrapped boards with a printed paper label which reads in translation: “Album of Landscapes in Song and Yuan Styles by Wang Zhongchu” which is enclosed in blue cloth boards, also bearing a printed paper label which reads in translation: “Landscape Painting in Sung and Yuan Styles by Yan Tian Jushi. Inscribed by Luo Zhenyu”, and with two 1” bone fasteners on the side. Each of the landscape prints has a red name stamp. The translation of the book's epilogue by the poet Luo Zhenyu reads in full: “Record of Wang Zhongchu is rarely found in art history since very few of his works survive today. Wang is only mentioned as excelled at landscape paintings in Huashi Huizhuan (History of Chinese Paintings), quoting Quan Zhou Fu Zhi (History of Quanzhou Fu). This album was kept by Gong family collection in Jiang-Nan. It is a recreation of the elegance and harmony associated with Sung and Yüan Styles. It shows that Wang was equally talented as other masters in his time and even surpassed those who only proficient in emulating. I have always appreciated the works by Gao Danyou for Gao's paintings are lyrical as poems written by Yu Yang Shanren. I would say that Zhongchu's works deserve the same compliment. Inscribed by Shangyu Luo Zhenyu at Yinli Zaisitang in Dong-Shan Qiao She, mid December, year of Hsuan-Tung Jiayin (A.C. 1914).” The book is in very good to near fine condition with some minor fading and edge wear to the blue cloth with its paper label showing a bit of darkening. The green silk shows very minor signs of use with a 2” incised curved line to the rear board, some slight darkening to the label, and there is a 1/4” dot to the bottom edge. All of the interior pages are of heavy quality paper and are in fine condition. A lovely book depicting beautiful paintings from a distant time in China's history.
