1 MILESTONE, LEWIS & FRANK SINATRA An Archive of 44 Original Black & White Photographic Prints and Negatives from Film Director Lewis Milestone's Scouting Location Trip to Las Vegas in Preparation for His Production of the Original Film Version of Ocean's Eleven. Plus Later On the Set Images of the Motion Picture In the Process of Being Filmed
Las Vegas, NV 1960
The archive consists of 44 pieces (7 original black & white photgraphs and 37 original black & white negatives). Seven original black & white photographic prints (each measuring 5 x 3 1/2) from the estate of film director Lewis Milestone. The photos were taken in the Riviera Casino in Las Vegas during the production of the Warner Bros. film Ocean's Eleven. Two of the photos include its star Frank Sinatra and all of them show the film's director Lewis Milestone on the set accompanied by various crew members and film equipment. Also present from the Milestone estate is thirty-seven original negatives (each measuring 5 x 4) of Las Vegas casino interiors and exteriors: eleven from the Riviera, seven from the Sahara, six from the Desert Inn, five from the Sands, four from the Flamingo, three labeled Radio Room and one labeled Sheriff's. The casino photos are noteworthy for showing ceilings and other design and architectural details not normally seen in similar pictures of the period. Many shots include images of slot machines, gaming tables, cocktail bar and dining areas, storage facilities and employee and service entrances, men and women enjoying their time, and all of them evoke a bygone era of early Las Vegas glamour. Also shown are behind the scenes areas of the casinos not normally photographed. All of the prints and negatives are in fine condition. With a letter of provenance. Lewis Milestone (1895 - 1980) was a Russian-born American motion picture director, best known for directing Two Arabian Knights (1927) and All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), both of which earned him Academy Awards for Best Director. His acclaimed body of work also includes The Front Page (1931), The General Died at Dawn (1936), Of Mice and Men (1940), Ocean's 11 (1960), and Mutiny on the Bounty (1962), and in various television productions. Ocean's 11 starred the Rat Pack - Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop, with Sinatra, Martin and Davis being regarded as the group's lead members. He was also a founding member of the Director's Guild.
