13 WAPLINGTON, NICK, SUSANNAH FRANKEL, ALEXANDER MCQUEEN Alexander McQueen Working Process. Photographs by Nick Waplington
Bologna, Italy Damiani 2013
First Edition. Signed by the author / photographer Nick Waplington on the front free endpaper. Oversize art book format, illustrated throughout, 9 3/4” x 11 3/4”, unpaginated (approx. 300 pages). Introductory essay by Nick Waplington. As new copy in as new dust jacket, showing just a trace of handling. A stunning photographic chronicle of the creative process of fashion designer Alexander McQueen and his 2009 women's ready-to-wear collection ‘The Horn of Plenty!' begun “in earnest” in early February with the runway show taking place in Paris just a month later on March 10. McQueen had granted the photographer Nick Waplington full access and creative control for the project which combines images of landfills and landscape photos of London, recycling plants, including those from the Negev desert in Israel with his design studio images of fittings, fabrics, models, craftspeople, and more, thus embracing McQueen's ‘recycling' theme of the show as well as his professional reputation for being a bit messy. This book represents the collaboration between McQueen and Waplington, with the final editing choices being McQueen's alone. Sadly, Alexander McQueen died nearly a year later at 40 years of age, on February 11, 2010, having committed suicide, leaving behind a legacy of extraordinary design and artistic achievement. From the eloquent forward [sic] by fashion editor and writer Susannah Frankel: “In the end, though, it is important to remember that however challenging the subject matter, this collection was created with and among old friends. For all the stress, exasperation and even pain that went into its making there was lightness and laughter too. Alexander McQueen was fragile, more fragile, perhaps, than anyone around him realised, but he was happiest when working on a show. Those moments of contentment are here for all of those involved to remember him by and to be seen by anyone else turning these pages.”
