The film tells the story of a college professor/writer (Douglas) who is in the grips of a long-term writer's block, is having an affair with the college's chancellor (McDormand) who announces she is pregnant with his child, is struggling to maintain his status as a writer of note while a promising student (Maguire) begins to outshine him, which along with a quirky assortment of other characters and bizarre plot twists, make for an endearing, smart, and funny film. Based on the book by Pulitzer prize-winning author, Michael Chabon. The film won an Oscar for Best Music, Original Song (Bob Dylan for the song "Things Have Changed") and was nominated for Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published (Steven Kloves) and Best Editing (Dede Allen).
