Fine copy in a near fine dust jacket with some minor fading to the spine. A well-researched history of English and Scottish theatre, including medieval stage-management, devils, dragons, and other apocalyptic beast design, fireworks, and more.

Illustrated throughout with black & white photographs of the great actor, Sir John Gielgud, in some of his most memorable stage performances, including Hamlet, Twelfth Night, King Lear, Romeo and Juliet, Three Sisters, The Merchant of Venice, Richard the Second, The Importance of Being Earnest, Macbeth, The Lady's Not for Burning, Julius Caesar, Much Ado About Nothing, etc. With personal family photos as well. The endpapers have a decorative design incorporating photographic portraits of many of Mr. Gielgud's leading ladies, including Jessica Tandy, Peggy Ashcroft, Beatrice Lillie, Marie Tempest, Dorothy Green, and Adele Dixon. Very good plus copy with some minor fading to the cloth at the top and bottom edges of the front board in a near fine dust jacket with a hint of edge wear.

Very good plus copy with some very minor edge wear in a slightly used dust jacket with a touch of dust soiling, a 3/4” piece to the top of the spine, and a few small chips and tears.
