1 SILVERSTEIN, SHEL & JEAN SHEPHERD Original Program Illustrated by Shel Silverstein With Text by Jean Shepherd & Shel Silverstein for the Play, “Look Charlie - A Short History of the Pratfall”
New York Orpheum Theater 1958
First Edition. Four pages with a dozen drawings by Shel Silverstein. 10" x 6". This extremely rare program is from the estate of actress Lois Nettleton, who was married to writer, raconteur, radio personality, actor, Jean Shepherd from 1960-1967. It comes with a signed letter of authenticity from the executor of Nettleton's estate. This play was performed off Broadway at the Orpheum Theater for only three consecutive Monday nights (in December, 1958). Jean Shepherd and Shel Silverstein were best friends - and Silverstein illustrated the program. The play starred Jean Shepherd, Shel Silverstein, Lois Nettleton, Herb Gardner, Gerald Feil, Barbara Quanley, Rita Gardner, and was produced by Jerome Kretchmer and Dorothy Love. At the bottom of the front cover, under "A Short History of the Pratfall" -, it says: "Created, Conceived, Written, Directed, Inspired, Perfected, Head Thumped, Ballyhooed, and worried over by Jean Shepherd. Mr. Shepherd takes no credit for the strudel. The strudel was created by Mrs. Max Feinberg." Also part of the cast were Rita Gardner (before she starred in THE FANTASTICKS as "Luisa" in 1960), and Lois Nettleton (who had recently appeared as "Maggie" in CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF on Broadway. She was not yet married to Jean when she appeared in this play).
