 1. SEWELL, ANNA  Autograph Letter Signed from the Author of Black Beauty
Buxton 4 pages, octavo 17th, n.y
A very rare original Autograph Letter Signed by the author, Anna Sewell (1820-1878), author of the children's book classic Black Beauty, written to her father. Ò...Dear Father. Mother & I got thy letters yesterday. Thank thee for them - we have not yet received the two letters which thou send word had been enclosed to us last week. I thought we should have had them sent from Frann as we thought from one getting thy note to Lucy, she would have received that sent to us. The snow is very heavy & we think Philip will not return from Norwich to-day, as it is a great exposure. The dear girls are all with chicken pox but getting on pretty well. If we are not snowed up we hope that most of us will return tomorrow. We are very anxious to hear how thou art in health & spirits please tell us. I hope thou art have a fowl for dinner sometimes it is no use saving them only do not kill both the young cocks there are poulets which must be killed. Grant will judge which, how about the butter? & the eggs?? ----- & the plants? We had hoped that Grace & Annie might have you to Lewis to finish the holidays... I fear this will be too much for Mother alone & cannot quite see my way home soon as I had hoped it is a very heavy business altogether that this New Year has brought us, & will call for sacrifice all round but if we can only stand in one right place that will be the great thing & the only way to peace & blessing. Be sure to let us know how thou art getting on - does the snow come into the roof very much over the end room or the attics? Pray take care of my plants. Mother is so glad her fern looks well. Johnny who is here sends his dear love to thee, also Mother, she has quite lost her cough & is looking a little better.... We are so sorry to be away so long from our poor boys & King. Remember us very kindly to him & how is he getting on? We are very glad thou art in the spare room, hast thou got any nice book to read? Is it very lonely for thee. We are often thinking of you & talking of thee & wonder how thou art. I wish enough to be at home with thee. Farewell. Thy loving child. Anna Sewell.Ó The letter is in fine condition and according to Sewell's forthcoming biographer there are less than 20 known Sewell letters in existence.
