First Edition - British. Octavo, late 19th-century three-quarter brown calf, of which the spine has been rebacked with the original leather and lettering retained, and with the original boards. With two unobtrusive ownership signatures. Uniformly very good condition with a scattering of foxing and slight evidence of use. The title page includes the following: “To which are added some account of his public life, a variety of anecdotes concerning him, by M.M. Brissot, Condorcet, Rochefoucault, Le Roy, etc. And the eulogem of M. Fauchet, Constitutional Bishop of the Department of Calvados, and a member of the National Convention. This English expanded edition of Benjamin Franklin's renowned and widely read autobiography, originally published in Paris in 1791, a year after his death, is an eloquent, often humorous, practical, and astute observation of the social, political, and cultural spirit of his time. He wrote the first five chapters of his autobiography in England in 1771, picked it up again in 1784-85 while he was living in Paris, and completed it in 1788 when he returned to the United States. Franklin concludes his writing in 1757 when he was 51 years old. Bound in is a 147 page copy of William Falconer's best-selling poem ‘The Shipwreck,' published in London, printed for T. Cadell, in 1769, third edition, corrected. Falconer was a merchant seaman, and had survived a shipwreck as a young man, only to suffer another accident at sea in 1769, and drowned.

3 VALENTI, JACK - MOTION PICTURE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA Original Jack Valenti's Briefcase Used in Hollywood & Washington in Valenti's Role as President of the Motion Picture Association of America

Original black leather briefcase that belonged to Jack Valenti. Near the handle is stamped in gold his initials J.V.” The case has two combination locks and the combination numbers to unlock will be provided to the purchaser. 17 1/2 inches wide, 13 inches tall, 4 1/2 inches thick. Very good condition. From Valenti's estate with a Certificate of Authenticity. Jack Valenti (1921-2007) is best known in his long-time role as President of the Motion Picture Association of America from 1966 to 2004. During his 38 year position in the MPAA, Valenti created the MPAA film rating system which is still used today. In 1963, Valenti was in the John F. Kennedy motorcade in Dallas, and he is seen in the famous photograph of Lyndon Johnson being sworn in as President on Air Force One. Valenti flew back to Washington with Johnson and literally lived in the White House for two months helping Johnson take the reins of the presidency. He was the first special assistant to President Johnson and served at Johnson's direction as a liaison to the Republican Congressional leadership. Hollywood mogul and Democratic fundraiser Lew Wasserman pressured Lyndon Johnson to let Valenti leave in 1966 to run the MPAA. A striking and articulate man who easily made friends, Valenti became a figure of considerable influence in both Hollywood and Washington. Few people have known as many famous and powerful people as Valenti.
