Fourth Edition Revised. Thomas Hardy's copy with his ownership signature “Thomas Hardy” written in ink on the front free endpaper, and on the rare pastedown are five pencilled words of notes in his hand. On the front pastedown is the striking Thomas Hardy estate bookplate printed in red which reads “FROM THE LIBRARY OF THOMAS HARDY, O.M. - MAX GATE.” 584 pages. Hinges cracked, very good in original brown gilt-stamped cloth. Books from Hardy's library rarely appear on the market.

Affixed to the front pastedown is the engraved bookplate of noted collector Paul Lemberly which has been boldly signed by the author, Thomas Hardy. Affixed opposite on the front free endpaper is the front portion of the envelope which returned the bookplate. Fine clean copy.

4 HARDY, THOMAS & NASTASSJA KINSKI Tess of the d'Urbervilles
New York Limited Editions Club 1956 
First Edition Thus. This copy has been specially signed by actress Nastassja Kinski who starred in the highly acclaimed 1979 motion picture version of this novel directed by Roman Polanski which won three Academy Awards. Kinski has signed the book “ Nastassja Kinski” and has added her character's name “Tess.” This book is signed by the illustrator, Agnes Miller Parker, on the colophon page. This is copy #834 of 1500 numbered copies. Near fine copy in a near fine slipcase with a trace of edge wear. Small square octavo (5-1/2" x 8-1/2") bound in heavy canvas with a reproduction of one of the color engravings and a green leather spine label stamped in gold. Introduction by Robert Cantwell. With illustrations by Agnes Miller Parker, seven double-page color wood engravings and twenty-four black-and-white engravings in the text. Additionally, a DVD of Nastassja Kinski in Tess accompanies the book.
