Dame Margaret Rutherford brought many film and stage characters to life with her accomplished talent and memorable physical presence. She is perhaps best remembered for her portrayals in film of Agatha Christie's unshakable sleuth, Jane Marple, and, both on stage in 1941 and on screen in 1963, in the role of Madame Arcati in Noel Coward's classic work Blithe Spirit. She won a Best Actress in a Supporting Role Oscar in 1964 for The V.I.P.s which starred Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
