1 CARROLL, PAUL VINCENT, LOUELLA PARSONS & CHARLES CHAPLIN Shadow and Substance - A Play By Paul Vincent Carroll
New York Random House 1937
First Edition, First Printing. From the library of the queen of Hollywood gossip columnists, Louella Parsons, with her bookplate. The bookplate states EX LIBRIS - LOUELLA PARSONS MARTIN. The border depicts two radio microphones which indicates Parson's Hollywood radio broadcasts. At the top of the bookplate are two crossed quill pens with an inkwell to represent her writing. The central image is a stack of eight books stacked on a table with Parsons's pet pug dog trying to climb up on the table. Parsons was married to Dr. Harry W. Martin, Hollywood studio physician at 20th Century-Fox. Affectionately, called Docky by Parsons. The play Shadow and Substance, was a big hit on Broadway, and surprisingly Charles Chaplin was so taken it, that he purchased the motion picture rights and intended to film it, with Chaplin as director. It was during the pre-production period of Shadow and Substance that Chaplin signed aspiring actress Joan Barry to play the lead. Preparation began, costumes prepared and sets in design. During this period, Chaplin had a brief fling with Barry but broke off the affair as he discovered she was emotionally unstable and mentally ill. The production halted, and Barry tried to break into Chaplin's home. She later became pregnant and had a baby girl. She then had Chaplin prosecuted claiming he was the father. Rival gossip columnist, right wing, Hedda Hopper viciously and directly supported Barry. Louella Parsons was a friend of Chaplin's and supported him throughout the trial. Chaplin was acquitted, and blood tests proved he could not be the father, but the vindictive judge made Chaplin financially support the child. The book is in near fine condition in original cloth in a used, and chipped later state dust jacket.
